Na I dont buy that sheit, I know exactly what it costs to produce a kite, You'd be surprised !. The margins the retailers set are unbelieveable compaired to how much the brand sell's them for .

It costs around $210 ozzie dollars for a 13m kite depending on quantities.$210 is for around 250 kites and is kite only (pump and bag).
The bigger manufactures would be able to do it a fair bit cheeper cos of high quantities.

i'm a businessman and can't stand this rubbish.

Lets say a kite costs $800 and sells for $1800. They're making $1000!! what a rip off!

a) you only get to sell them for 3 to 4 months over summer.
b) you have to pay to keep the shop rent paid for 12 months.
c) you employ staff
d) you don't have another job to keep your business open
e) you pay to advertise in glossy mags & web sites
f) you get stuck with stock that doesn't/won't sell that you have to sell for less that you bought it for.

fair go! If it was such a big money spinner, why is everybody is working as employees rather than running businesses?

it takes balls to run a company and put 10's of thousands of dollars on the line each year to commit to stock purchases.

There's more to the price of a kite than "retail-cost" maths

See.

Im a consumer I really dont give a ****.

In the end its the retailers choice to open a shop.

Its their choice to sell kites at $2000

and it's my choice not to buy kites at rip off prices.

You're saying that the shops are ripping people off and I can't agree with that.

Buying your kite for less is your choice and thats ok.

But, there's no need to generalise and degrade business and business people in the process.

Shops are great. How else can you find a harness that fits without going into a shop carrying lots of stock so you can try 3 brands and sizes on?

we all know its not necessarily the retail shop that is taking the largest cut - but the more indirect the kite is to the buyer from the factory then obviously the cost gets out of control.

Maybe if less fingers were taking their % then the price would be better for the kiters - same quality product at a lower price.

If prices were lower then more people would buy new kites - so its a balance between making enough money for the shops to do well and making it attractive for people to upgrade every year. We all know the shops need to make money - but the markup from the factory does seem pretty steep.

G'day Carbine
Rip-off is such a subjective term isn't it?.
Do you apply your anti commerce, anti profit/fair go priciples to everything you own or buy?
How about a pair of jeans or shorts, do you realise they are made in the same asian factories and only "cost" a few dollars compared to the $100 or more people pay for them in shops.
Maccas food, the biggest cost component is wages, how much do you think the ingredients in a cheeseburger cost?? Do you complain, do you boycott all retail outlets?

I can buy t-shirts for around $7-9 before I get them screenprinted, they are the same quality as ones I see retailing in shops with brands like Von Dutch and Cult prints on them for $50 to $80.

If you apply ther same stringent standards to everything you own or buy then you would not be hypocritical, but I have never met anyone who is that principled and disciplined. Its a commercial world we live in.

Try telling the 10 people who are employed by Kitepower that we are a rip off. Try investing 400 grand and seeing a nett return of around 7c in the dollar, working 7 days a week, making sure everyone except yourself gets to kite. Try paying all the wages, taxes, and live in a country and city that has incredible facilities, like paved roads, police, ambos, health care, safety net minimum wages and unemployment benefits, soc sec benefits, pensions. Its not a perfect system, but if you don't like it contribute more to make changes, illogical whining on forums hiding behind anonymity will not change a thing.
Don't want or need any sympathy I love what I do, but thats the reality of it.

Keep it real.

And it is a negative persons CHOICE to be dumb about reality, and blame someone else for all their problems, including prices they pay for anything................

No one is holding guns to peoples heads in this country to force them to buy anything.

Anonymous whining is completely stupid behaviour.

So i started some problems with saying the costs of kites.
But i didn't say that it included marketing and development.I just answered the question how much does it cost to make.
The shops are great cos how else would you try samples and see all the new gear that is coming in.
The price of haveing a shop is very high, think about all the stock they hold, rent, staff(good staff that know what there doing).
Ofcourse they have to make a decent profit for all the long hours and stress that it takes.
I'm in the same situation so i have an idea about it all.
If there was no gain why would anybody do it.

Wow fellas, get some wind.

"Who is the the customer?" should also be added to that 101 Ec. essay.

Then for the next essay we can go on to "lead users" and "s-curves" and "thechno. shifts"....a whole course in Ec. for free on the Forum.

Hey Laurie, what you going to do with all this inellllllllllligance...?

Natter asked:
"How much does it cost to make a kite" ?

Maybe you could get an honest answer from the person who actually does it......

The Chinese girl who slaves 12hrs per day, 6 days per week in the sweat shop.

She eats and sleeps at the factory and gets the princely sum of $10 a week.

I have never done any accounting or economics, but I know this :
I can make 7 cents in the dollar with my money in the bank - why don't you save yourself the hassle of working every day and just put your money in the bank? "For the love of the sport"?!?! yeah right! Something is rotten in the state of denmark methinks...

Let's keep it real.

Rip-off is an objective term ( it exsists in reality) it means, an act of explotaion.

If one buys a tee for 7 dollars, paints it, and then resells it for eighty dollars to a "groupy" this clearly "exploits" the groupy mentality.

And so we have the quite "real" objective, the exploitation of the groupy populace tru rip-off.

Purely personal attacks; those unsupported by actual fact drag down our sport.

Let's keep it real please.

Thanks
ottis

Fine, shop around, give me a call sometime, you could be amazed at the deals I do!!!!

Not all shops offer nothing to their customers, some shops value customers as the single most important component of a business!

I don't have a problem with anything that happened on the egroups, its all water under the bridge, if you do, then that is your choice, and only you can resolve YOUR issues, thats what CHOICE and personal repsonsibility is.
