Hi Steve,
I had my lessons with Ian Young in the middle of the river, using flysurfers; was safe and great fun. Got a 9.3 Warrior and a 5.0 Maniac after the lessons. Unfortunately I didn't listen to Ian's advice and once went to Peli Point, long before I was able to stay upwind. I would not recommend to go there as a beginner, it was really crowded with lots of kiters and windsurfers. There are people teaching kitesurfing with several students in the launching and landing area in onshore winds and you can't use much of the beach to walk up again as most of it is a protected nature reserve; in short: can be dangerous and frustrating down there as a beginner.
It's much safer at Lucky Bay, I fly my flysurfers there. There's usual experienced local kiters around who you can ask for help and local advice.
regards,
Sven
