I have an old 7footer that I want to put straps on.

I would like to make them removable so I can still use it as a surfboard during typhoon season.
Any advice on the best way to do it?
What is the best way to put screws in the deck?
What do you call the thing in the deck you screw straps into?
Any suppliers of the gear I`ll be needing would be a bonus.

Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated!

Get your surfboards for surfing and use your old boards from surfing to use as kiteboards. Just nail in the footstraps on your old boards and use that. Don't be a tightarse support your local shaper!

Hey Glaucus,

If you want it to last, I recommend taking it to a local shaper and asking him to insert plugs into the deck for you, that way you can remove the straps for surfing. I would strongly advise that you also put an extra layer of glass or two under the foot pad areas other wise you'll have heel dents coming through the bottom of ya board in no time.

Definately use deck pads to cushion the impacts and help spread the load from edging. Yes just hard edging alone on a poly surfboard will trash the deck.

And remember, DON'T JUMP IT! If you jump a normal surfboard with straps, you will inevitably break it in half even if you beef the deck.

Rip it up!

I did it myself it s pretty easy

Lots of board shapers will have rectangular deck plug plastic thingys you screw the straps into, just ring around to locate some.

getting the strap position is critical but using an old directional will give you an idea of where to put them, I found the back foot needs to be a little further forward than your normal stance for surfing (hint-get plugs that have 4 or so holes so you get some adjustment)

use a large drill bit to drill the holes into the deck to insert the plugs into
take your time here and mark the depth on the drill bit with some tape so you dont go right through, also drilling holes straight through the sides of the plugs helps the resin to encase the plugs properly and finish off with a layer of glass & matting over the plugs,

worked well for me

thanks for the feedback dudes.

I`ll get onto the local factories and see what I can come up with.

My only problem is that I don`t speak the language here, so nearly everything is in some strange sign language. Aaahhhh....the simplicity of Australian life seems like a distant memory! Grin and bear it.

also if you plan on having a shot dont drill the holes on or through the stringer

Put them just either side of it

Add some little chopped up bits of glass to the q-cell.
If you can't get inserts from stuart bell I think SOS has some underground ones.

So I finally got the inserts in my deck.......thanks howley.

I ride Geoff Mccoy boards so the tail area is huge, fish like but no spin out at high speed.

wanted to ride today but, their wasn`t enough wind to keep the kite in the sky.

Huey has got a problem with me, I`m sure of it.

Thanks for all the help fellow wave warriors!
