Im going to Hawaii in August. Anyone kite surfed in Hawaii.Im relatively new ..one season ....just up on my board....so im not looking to do waves...flat water would be just right.

Im not sure which island is best . MAUI on thennet looks ok.


Any advice appreciated.

At your level, Oahu is the only real choice. You need Kailua Bay it is usually a steady 15-18 knots trade wind, which blows non stop between May and October. Maui tends to be crowded, gusty and strong.

You dont want to stay in Waikiki, look for private accomodation rental on the net. Anywhere in Kailua or Lanikai is good. Not much night life but if you want to practice your kiting, it's the sh1t!

I spent a month sailboarding in Maui in August about ten years ago. There isnt usually any waves that time of the year as its their summer, but there is plenty of wind. I can recall steady trade winds blowing at 35knts constant increaing to 45knts as the afternoon progressed. The wind doesnt pick up till about 11am and then it progessively strengthens and really blows, not gusty winds just solid strong winds. How big is your kite?

Maui at that time was really well set up for rental gear, everything was new, they had all the brands and they were very professional. The place was unreal, I still have heaps of fond memories of sailing out over the reafs at Maui, you can see the bottom all the way out for ages at Kanaha beach park, and then it goes deep.

From memory the beaches are not very wide and lined with palms so I can imagine it not being the most frendly place.

Don't bother calling Danza if you want somebody to kite with in Hawaii.
He will be too busy drinking red bull and hanging out with with big Robbie Naish!

The wind is definately stronger on Maui at that time of the year than 12-20knts. I can remember being overpowered with a 4.5m pryde wave sail and having to change down to a 3.5m sail. In sydney in 25Knots I used to use a 5.5m sail.

In Maui the island is a figure 8 shaped by two mountains one on each, and the wind funnels through the middle, so its stronger there than on the other islands.
