just bought the pvc pipe for the slider. just goin to make the basic two pipes (6 metres) accross and cut "T" section pipe an also use the pipes for the legs (about 1.5 metres high. and six of them). will it be stable enough if i stab the legs in around 50cms in the sand? any suggestions of how to make it more stable? or any other way of making a simple slider. we have heaps of pipe, just need to put it together now

cheers

make it bigger than 6m, and higher than 1.5 ;)

unless u have to transport it
....

sliders are rocket science just whack it in the water and hope it doesnt break on the first session.

good luck getting it 50cm into the sand

on a more serious note with 6 legs over 6 metres it will be heaps stable anyway so u shouldnt worry about that factor...

instead of a normal T piece for the middle supports modify it to not create bumps along the rail

Yeah cut the top off the T's, the join won't be nearly as strong but no bump.

getting it 50cm into the sand will be interesting, however if you did get it that far down, fark it wouldnt move! i agree with the tops being cut off, as a bump on the sliding surface would be all bad is you managed to catch an edge

have you thought about other means of stabalising it? like making it floating instead of "hard standing"? or using A frames with thinner legs into the sand (easier to push down)?

just some things to consider. hope to see it in action soon, and if you need any design help, let me know, might put this 3 years of engineering studies to some practical use

thanks for the advise everyone. i just finished it an hour ago.

yeah spaceymonkey, it has to be transportable around the bay and fit it my van when pulled apart.

its pretty much as i descibed above. and yeah, i cut the tops of the "t" section. its double pipe width too so its stable as all hell, just gotta hope it sticks into the sand now. i also cut the bottom of the pipe on angles hopefully making it easier to stab in the ground. glued the t section underneath the top section and using the blue crap and put stainless steel screws into it, and the legs are goin to be detachable so we can make make longer/shorter ones for it. sheppo3930, may need your engineering advise if it doesnt stick into the sand tommorow on our test run. wanted to avoid "a framing it so there were no obstacles to catch a falling body on

thats a sick idea! definatly could be worth a shot if we cant dig it into the sand enough tomorrow. dont think theres gunna be any wind on sunday (or tomoro for that matter) but we just wanna see if it will be stable. but if theres wind sunday, will definatly have it out somewere in the bay, depending on the wind direction. probably out in aspendale.

yeah make sure u drill a hole or two in each leg to there's no buoyancy created from trapped air, other wise when u are pushing the legs into the sand, u will be fighting against the trapped air...eva tryed to dunk a person in a lifejacket? that sorta resistance.

if u lay the slider on it's side and let it fill up wih water you don't need holes.

If you are making it transportable an idea would be to leave the rail off so that you can pour a bucket of water in it and plunge it out the bottom somehow so the water coming out parts the sand for you. unfortunately it won't work if you've already cut the bottoms off on an angle.
Fill with sand at the end to give a stable footing.
If you can do this with T piece on it shouldn't have any probs(just reread your description.)

is the T piece smooth or does it have a ridge that stops the pipe from going all the way through?

happy sliding

You come up here Bring your slider too and we'll set up a little park for the day. We've built another one, and have another small rail so we can have a little gap or something. Aidan built a sick kicker too, we'll probably finish that off today and we still have the big one but someone burnt one of the stands for it (F*&KWITS). So more building and money on wood... It becomes expensive huh I'll come down there too when I get a chance, maybe when it's not -100C in the water. Sydney's cold enough as it is.

sign up to photobucket.com to load the photos, then u can link them in your post... hey if i can do it, it cant be hard!

a few days ago saw some kids with skim boards down at frankston, they had a kicker and 2 sliders, i was impressed at how they managed to catch a bus with all their kit to the beach!
