hey,
i want to upgrade my old (2002) naish aero 18meters to a 5th line (naish shift system)
will it be possible to get my kite modified by someone who knows what they are doing and ride my old kite with a 5th line??
i also heard that with the 5th line, when you crash and the 5th line becomes active, the kite will not fall into the water but hover just above the surface of the water.is this true?if yes, will it still be the case with my old aero??

my fear is going out too far and crashing and not being able to relaunch. and i hear that the shift it great for relaunching.

thanks

have a kite repairer sew on an attachment point on the leading edge - if they repair alot of kites they will have done this many times already (check moti from ar wake n surf at tweed heads if you are in qld or northern nsw)

you need to place a stopper part way up the fifth line about half the length of your leading edge from your bar with the kite laid out flat. too much further the kite will hover upside down, too close it wont depower. if you get it right the kite will fall to the water and sit on its side ready to relaunch. if you cant be bothered tuning the stopper, its better to have it set too far away than too close for obvious reasons, but if the wind really picks up it can be hard to get the bar back cause you'll be pulling in sharp spectra and the kite will still be pulling as it flies upside down.

nicely explained bondo, maybe you should enclose your dvd.
kiteordie, just buy a shift system.
it's a no brainer and relaunch is a dream,
a lot of my friends have stitched an attachment point on by hand.
kite performance and relaunch goes up a bar.(or two)

hey kiteordie,

If your going to add a 5th line on an aero... add it in addition to your normal 4 lines, otherwise you will stuff the performance of your kite. But if I was you I wouldn't bother... just practice water launching your kite as is. The 5th line also may damage your trailing edge.

If you are in Sydney area go to Kite magic
For 30 dollars the owner sewed 5th line attachments in my 2004 15m and 20m. He reinforced it on inside and did a professional job with triple stitch when closing the leading edge and best of all, he sewed in a ring on to the webbing on both of my bars for the line to pass thru so that I can release the bar and retrieve and not messup my spinleash system.
It is great for the 20 as when you have a big light wind kite in light wind, it is very hard to get them to flip over.
For the 15m I added a cleat system so that I can trim the leading edge, it has helped the kite retain its shape so that it is less likely to deform when hit by gusts. It is a good inexpensive way to go if you are not ready(or too cheap) to upgrade to a new kite.

What about in Melbourne, wheres does everyone get their kites fiuxed, i usually go to Horizon sails but sometimes there is a long wait and the guy doesn't seem too kiter friendly. I am sure with over 400 kiters in vic that there must be some other places???

once the kite reaches the 1 year mark... it's pretty easy to repair them yourself... just buy a patch kits aswell as soweing the patch on around the edges with waxed twine... bladders need to be plastic welded - under $50 usually... and best of all, when you go on holidays and break something , you can fix it and keep kiting :) unless you put a 1 foot rip in the LE and bladder :(

5th lines are a waste of string.

Relaunching fat arse 18m kites in pus wind is swimming practise.

Stroke....stroke....stroke
