hey all,

First post on here so hi to everyone.

As a newbie with a few lessons under my belt I'm looking to blow some cash and get cracking with my own gear. I've spent a long time trawling through the forums and speaking to a few guys trying to get some (objective ) opinions on what I should be buying.

Needless to say, to the uninitiated, Best are looking pretty tempting, especially with the 3 for 2 thing, although my mind is my no means made up. Anyway, I'm 80kgs and live here in Perth so was wondering what's a sensible quiver for me to be getting on with. Also, my girlfriend is learning too and weighs 60kgs. I was wondering if a 3 kite quiver might allow us both to kite in the same conditions e.g me on 14 and her on 10 or whatever?

Look forward to meeting some of you down at peli point

cheers

SWEET, WATS MINE SAY....

DUDE, DONT LISTEN TO HALF OF WHAT PEOPLE HAV TO SAY IN THIS FORUM AND ON THE BEACH. EVERYONE LIKES A DIFFERENT SETUP AND IT IS ALSO DIFFERENT WHEN LEARNING.

WHEN I LEARNT I LEARNT WITH TOO BIG A KITE SO I WAS ALWAYS GOIN, BUT TOOK A BIT TO GO FOR SOME TRICKS COS U GET SPANKED HARD WITH A BIG KITE.

MOST PEOPLE SAY HERE IN PERTH U NEED A 12 OR A 14 FOR MOST DAYS.
I THINK THAT IS RUBBISH, BUT AGAIN MY OPINION.
LOOK AT THE BIG GUYS THAT ARE SPONSORED LIKE WAINMAN, TOBIAS, ALBREU, LEOBE ETC. THEY USE ULTRA SMALL KITES, HELL LOU USES ONLY AN 8M KITE IN ALL CONDITIONS. THE LATEST IN TRICKS NOW IS UNHOOKED KITELOOPS N HANDLEPASSES AND U CANT DO THAT WITH A 12 OR 14M KITE WHEN IT IS BLOWIN 20-25 KNOTS EVERYDAY HERE....

I GUESS WHAT I AM SAYIN IS THINK ABOUT WHAT SORT OF STYLE U WANNA GO FOR AND WHERE U R GONNA KITE.
IF IT IS RIVER AND FLAT WATER STUFF THEN ID GO FOR SOMETHIN AROUND A 12 FOR U AND MAYBE AN 8 FOR UR GIRL IF U R GOIN FOR STANDARD SIZES.
BUT IF IT IS OCEAN I RECON U WANNA GO SMALLER.

I RODE ALL THIS SEASON WITH AN 8m AND DIDNT MISS MANY DAYS. STARTED WITH A CHICKEN LOOP BUT NOW RIDE WITH A PULLEY BAR. IT IS SOO MUCH MORE FUN WITH A SMALL KITE. IT IS FASTER AND EASIER ON THE BODY WHEN U R TRYING TRICKS AND DONT QUITE MAKE IT. ANOTHER THING I AM FINDING MORE FUN IS SHORT LINES. FASTER KITE AGAIN... FUN FUN FUN.

ALSO WATCH FOR THE NAMES, ESPECIALLY SOME OF THE BIG ONES OUT THERE COS THEY MAKE CRAP KITES AND WILL BE WORTH NOTHING IN A YEAR (ALTHOUGH MOST KITES ARE WORTH NOTHINg IN A YEAR NOW)

CAUTION, NICE TO SEE YOU OUT OF HIBERNATION!!

As an idea, I weigh 67kg and my 12m is my only kite, I ride it from 14 to 25 kn with 18 to 20kn being ideal.

If you go for 2 kites I would suggest about a 12 and 16.

If you go for 3 kites I would suggest maybe a 10 a 14 and 18.

Good Luck

Shannon

Hey CAUTION - interesting stuff. Could you provide any more info on the boards this guy uses with his 8m in lighter winds?
And just on Pedro's original topic about kites for your chick, I weigh 52kg and am happy on an 8m up to about 18kn, then prefer my 6m-it is nice and fast and lighter on the arms-but then I'm not into really overpowered stuff.

Hey Pedro, Chris and I (Holly) share a 3 kite quiver, an 8, 12 and 16. The majority of the time I am on the 8 and Chris is on the 12, but on lighter days I move up to the 12 and Chris goes onto the 16. Any day that Chris takes the 8 out is a day that I don't want to be out there .I think Chris is about 75kg and I am 58kg so I think it would be about the same for you and your girlfriend. It really depends how powered up you want to be, and what sort of conditions you want to ride in.

I USE A 140 WAKEBOARD. THE SECRET IS IN THE PULLEY BAR.
IT MAKES THE KITE MOVE SUPER FAST AND GIVES U THE FULL POWER OF THE KITE ALL THE TIME, WHERE USING A CHICKEN STRING DOES NOT.

IF U R REFERING TO LOU AS 'HE', HE CHANGES HIS BOARD SIZE AND ALWAYS KEEPS HIS 8M UP WITH LINES VARYING FROM 8m TO 20m.
HE USES A SURFBOARD SHAPE IN LIGHTER WINDS WITH A CHOPPED OFF TAIL AND THEN RANGES DOWN TO 90cm TWIN TIPS. ALL HAVE NO FINS AND BIG CONCAVE.

TOBIAS USES A MUTANT STYLE FOR LIGHTER WINDS AND THEN TWINNIES FOR DECENT WIND.
I TELL YA IT IS THE WAY THE SPORT IS GOIN AT THE MO, THERE IS NO NEED TO HANG ON TO BIIIG KITES AND RIP UR SHOULDERS OUT TO DO LARGE BOARD OFFS.

OH AND GOOD TO SEE U ALL MISSED ME GIRLIES, HAHA
UNFORTUNATELY I MADE THE MISTAKE ON SATURDAY OF GOING TO MAGESTIC BAY INSTEAD OF DRIVING FURTHER TO PT WALTER. CRAP.

cheers all - reckon I might go 9m Yarga, 12m & 16m Nemesis. Should give both me and the girlfriend a few options.
