my partner was asked to help launch someone's kite at the beach (while i was kiting), and then it all apparently went wrong somehow and kite ended up rolling into the power zone catapulting the kiter, giving couple of line burns to my partner and flying into some people on the footpath who were trying to stop the kite. From what i understand, another girl finally got a hold of the kite. The same kiter later on managed to launch and shortly after getting out seem to have crashed his kite and got the lines tangled in the sea weed... (not sure how experienced he was, but last night's conditions definitely weren't very smooth).

Now, i'm just interested in what happened and why he (or you if you are reading) lost control or couldn't quick release... as the Altona beach is very close to the street and trees and powerlines, and the results could have been much more catastrophic (i'm glad no one got injured, and feel for the kiter as sh1t can happen to anyone). Also, my partner doesn't kite, so she couldn't explain what exactly happened and why the kite lost control while she was trying to launch it for him... which also brings up another point - KITERS, make sure you ONLY get the experienced person to launch your kites. Even though my partner knows some basics about kiting, and she did launch my kite few times, she is not experienced at all, but in this case was only trying to be helpful when asked. And unfortunately i wasn't there to stop her from doing it.

Secondly, in terms of launching/landing, a kiter should be always mentally prepared to quickly react and pull the release trigger when launching/landing at the first sign of trouble, as the beach/land is not the place to take ANY risks...

Yep - my gf stepped in and helped. She isnt that experienced either, but does know how to catch and launch a kite - thanks to my regular training

I chatted to the guy briefly afterwards and suggested that a 12m kite for a novice in those wind conditions was not appropriate. I was on a 10m and weigh around 90kg.

From the sounds of it the kite was originally lauched somewhat downwind and on a gusty wind day, that spells trouble.

Altona lauch near the pier is a dangerous spot for the inexperienced as there is little margin for error with nearby road and power lines.

I also would recommend that your wife not launch kites - even to be helpful - easier in hindsight, but a lesson learnt.

I landed your 13m Fuel later in the evening...

Cheers
