I've noticed obver the years that Norah head is consistently winyer than nobby by about 5 kts in a NE seabreeze .i was wondering why?
is it that the wind meter is at the top of the head and much windier than at water level or is it that that area really gets great seabreezes. For example was yeterday really crankin down there?

I believe the wind meter is located on the Norah Head lighthouse, which is why it always looks windy there. FWIW, I've driven there numerous times and sat on the beach all day when the weather station was showing 15-20 knots and it was 8-12 knots on the beach.

same as today..it shows 15NE...

What is true tho is ...that when nora goes NE (on a typical summers day) nobby's and Stocko are about 60 -75 minutes behind.

Hi I have windsurfed and now kite surfed for the last 15 years using the norah head readings if you want to go out at nth entrance beach in a NE subtract about 3-6 knots and in a southerly at the local spot subtract 8-10 knts from the reading hope this helps.Rod

Its gotta be windier than bloody nobbys at the moment, how the hell can everywhere along NSW coast be almost green arrows, yet nobbys is still struggling to stay in yellows!

its because of the frikkin valley wind .I was speaking to a mate today and we agreed that we lose at least half of the potential NE winds due to the valley westerly pushing out .Its a bloody disgrace .its those damn coal mines up the valley .

well went down to budgewoi and it was definitely better than nobbys and heaps more wind and better waves .Only one guy out and 30 min drive from my place (which by the time I park and wander up past the no kiting sign is the same to nobbys) .I noticed nobbys was good for about an hour and that it was crowded as usual and the "NO FRIKKEN KITING " sign was even further up the beach than usual .
well i know where i'll be going when there is a strong westerly in the valley and when they ban kiting at nobbys

Google earth and check the beach angle, it's similar to Tacking Point at Port Mac, slightly cross off and gusty with too much headland at the same time the north shore can be pumping with wind.

Lachlan, this was taken just to the north of the Lakes Beach Surf Club at Norah Head yesterday around 3:00pm. (13Sep). 9 metre kite. I think when the westerly is quite strong, the seabreeze starts a fair way off shore, slowly moves inshore, then gives up. The Norah Head lighthouse just sticks out a bit from the normal coastline compared to Nobbys.

hang gliders .Yep same frustration with hang gliding NE at dudley too ,kinda fun tho watching the seagulls playing in the convergence .
Again my point about the hunter coastline with seabreezes is that the westerly doesn't allow the NE in on many ocassions whereas the lakes beach surf club and norah head area isn't effected anywhere near the same degree .Ever noticed in winter when there is no seabreeze effect that Nobbys is nukin 30-40 squids is 15 -25/30 and norah is about 10-15

I've always put that down to the terrain behind the lighthouse - and the lake smoothing out the wind flow with a different temperature???.
There is definately an effect by the Valley , Tony barton the local hangie instructor calls it Hunter valley suck! it works in reverse in a south easter,
