So what does everyone prefer.

there seems to be an interchange of the two words

I can understand kitesurfing in the early days - just like windsurfing

eg kiting used directional / surfboards etc and sailboarding used windsurfers - which was a brand

BUT

now we use wakeboards, surfboards, TT, skim boards, mutants - basically anything that means fun under a kite on the water

which leads me to think

why not drop the surfing bit and use boarding

so a general term is kiteboarding, which refers to using a kite and some form of board on the water

and use kitesurfing when youre doing that - in the waves with a directional or wave oriented mutant or tt board

just my 2c worth

what does everyone else think ??

Hey loose,

The name "kitesurfing" was originally the name for the reason you mentioned.

This is the reason some of the more established companies, organisations and businesses have names like Australian Kite Surfing Assoc., West Australian Kite Surfing Assoc. and Australian Kitesurfing School etc, because they were established back in 2000 or thereabouts, when there only was the name "kitesurfing"

It has been known internationally as "kiteboarding" for some time now.

"Kitesurfing" nowadays refers directly to kiting in the surf on any board you like. Wake style comes under "kiteboarding" as does general freestyle on both directionals and twin tips.

Then there is kiteskiing which covers both snow and water as long as you are using skis. I think "snowkiting" also covers snowboards and skis.

Then there's kite buggying which uses buggies and foils.

Not sure what you call mountain boarding with a kite or dirt surfing with a kite??? Maybe someone else will know. Steve McC???

Have a windy day!

Some of the other oldies might remember this issue came up a few years ago. The US mag 'kiteboarding' used to have the same ****house attitude that KBM (oz) has. It's now a lot better under the current editorial team. The old mag came under a lot of fire for never showing safety systems or leashed riders, bagging helmets and impact vests, only showing girls in skimpy bikinis etc.. and much was blamed on the editor at the time, ryan riccitelli.

He was 'consulting editor' or something for the first few issues of KBM, so I guess he revved up benno, dimi and the rest to be the biggest ****ers the could possibly be in order to sell more mags over here to impressionable 14 year old wannabe kiters.

Anyway. They took a swipe at the UK 'kitesurf' mag by running a big article on how it was really 'kiteboarding' not 'kitesurfing'. I don't think anyone really listened tho. Most people I know just say whichever comes out of their mouth first.

I call it kitelandboarding. So do some other people I know.

And yeah, the one thing I don't miss about kiteboarding in Australia is KBM. Can someone PM me or something when they get their act together and start publishing something decent.
