has anyone kiteboarded the maldives this time of year?
i`m off there for a job on sunday and am wondering what the wind is doing this time of year!
i`ll be there for a week and i might be able to get a kite in if i`m lucky but if the wind is not usually around i won`t bother takeing my gear. also whats the chance for hireing gear and what sort of quality? i know lots of questions but hey wouldn`t you.?
cheers to all.

I've had mates to there to Surf but never kite. I doubt you could rent kite gear there.

Take a 10m a surfboard and your kite cam rig nothing to loss (other than your gear on the flight )

I have ben to the Maldives twice at this time of year and had no wind. It is so close to the equator and is usually like glass! Fantastic surfing though, almost always waves to be had. The one day we had wind it was a squall. You can usually get hold of a sailboard there but I dont believe there are any kite hire spots. Not much in the way of shops at all. Take a mimi mal any have fun!

Anywhere within about 5 degrees of latitude from the equator is going to be no good for kiting, look up the definition of 'doldrums'. Even at 10 degrees you still need massive kites. The only exceptions might be localised conditions influenced by mountain ranges or some such, but I think the Maldives is pretty flat.

Unfortunately I haven't been, but did some research for a possible trip there. Found a company called 'Watersports World' ( www.watersports-world.com/ ) based at a resort on South Male Atoll, which advertises that they have kitesurfing gear, and an awesome flat water lagoon. Don't know how they run the show, but it could be a starting point?

I'm in the wrong business, Stu! At least come back with a few photos.

Give us a report when you get home.

The latitude has no influence to kiting conditions (see Cumbuco and other great kiting areas in the world near the equator).

been there a couple times...

was never any wind except for storm fronts which pass by the time it would take you to suss a spot and set up...

but the surf was epic and the water so clear a couple of metres deep looked like a couple of inches...

if you really are a male model.... who do you get to turn the computer on and do the typing for you...?

and do you have any hints on perfecting blue steel...?

i was in training for cage fighting, but as you can see from my avatar, i have the delicate yet masculine features required to take me to the top of the modelling game....
