I have kited in Reunion. I stayed in St Leu for the best part of a week and there was a good kiteable location about 15km to the Northwest near La Saline Les Bains. If you are a surfer there is a very good (quite famous) break at St Leu. I stayed at Dodo Spot right across the road from the break.

When it is firing you won't be able to miss the kiting location as there are plenty of people out. The launch is sketchy and not for beginners and I'd recommend some thin booties to protect your feet - lots of coral on the beach. The location has flat water on the inside and a reef break on the outside so something for everyone. Be careful going out in places by yourself as

1. There is a lot of protected beaches and coast where kiting is banned.
2. A lot of the beaches are designated swimming only and kiting is banned.
3. Reunion Island is notoriously sharky. There was a fatal attack the week prior to and the week while I was there. If nobody is out there is a good reason.

However, Reunion is an awesome location and there is plenty to do. I would recommend driving up to the old volcanic crater to the town of Cilaos and doing some hiking up around there. It's pretty spectacular. We also went canyoning with a guy called Daniel Ducrot. We had an awesome time, his English is pretty good although it helps to be able to speak a little French.

You'll need to hire a car to get around, but you can get a little Citroen for pretty cheap.
