Hi all Cairns kiters.... I'll be over there next week and was after some info as to whether I should bring my kite and board all the way from Perth.
Im staying in the heart of Cairns and will not have a car , looking at the google shots of Cairns though it looks like the water just in front of the city would be an ideal spot to kite??
I know its tidal there and the beach is crap but does anyone kite that area??
thanks

Dont kite the nard. Your kite will stick to the surface. Like poo to your shoe. Sacrid grounds for migrating birds. eh.

It's only been kited a few times, the conditions have to be perfect, including wind direction and tide, the only launch area is in a helecopter landing zone, and you can sink into the mud if you need to walk at all. Really is not worth the hassle. There are bus services to Yorkey's knob, and that's where the main action is. You can pony up the 50 bucks or so for a ferry to Green Island, but make sure the tides are around 1.2 metres or so when you are there.

G'day Sargio
I just returned from kiting a week of 20 -25knts in the Cairns area ( Yorkeys mainly also Port Douglas) But also managed to have a look at the beach front in Cairns city. Unfortunatly in order for the area to work you would need a NE or E wind direction. This time of year the winds are mostly the SE trade winds which are severly disrupted in the Cairns "bay" area due to the mountains ( 1800 -2000ft ) directly to the S , SE.
Yorkeys knob is the go, only about 10min away perfect winds and at the southern end flat water around the creek mouth ( just watch for crocs ) most days there are at least 5 - 10 kiters in this area )
good luck with it .
wish I was still there
