Hi Gavo,

I'm from SA, and have done a bit of kiting there mostly around the garden route (about 4hrs West of PE). December is a good time to be there, Mostly SE winds, afternoons 15+ knots. Not as reliable as the WA summer sea-breeze, although PE is known by the locals as the windy city, and I had plenty of mates who were keen pole-boarders there. Unfortunately PE is not blessed with the best waves on the coast, but travel East 2hrs to Port Alfred for infinite white beaches and wicked shore-breaks, or travel west to Plettenberg Bay for the sickest flat water lagoon you'll ever experience. My favourite sessions were at Wilderness beach or Meoli Beach (a not very well known beach by Sedgefield), if its blowing SE, you'll find a small group o locals there. Don't be put off by the hammerhead sharks, the 1st one you see is a bit scary, but you learn to live with them, and they seem harmless enough- although a bit too curious and f**king big if you get over the back line past the beach break.
I've never had waves as good as Wilderness beach, usually always atleast 6ft and solid.

You have to make it to Cape Town if you're going to SA. Its a stunning city, heaps to see and do, and the cape-doctor is world famous for its SW- make sure you take a good wetsuit, even in winter the water is numbingly cold, a reason why there are no swimmers at the beach even on hot summer days- kiting heaven, and you'll see hundreds of kites out there on a good day. (Blouberg Strand).

As for Mauritius, I'll let you know in July, I'm heading there late June, apparently their tradewinds blow from May to October, SE, and the info I've got says the SW peninsular is the place for flat water lagoons, and outer reef waves as big as you dare to go! the Morne Peninsular is the spot.

Email me if you want more info, enjoy it,

Oh, forgot to mention Jeffreys Bay is 1hr away from PE- worth a look too,

cheers

Hi Ric,

I need a bit of info on Mauritius. I'm gonna be there on the 29th June, and staying at the Sands Resort, its up the west coast somewhere, and about an hour from the airport.

How is the public transport, or can I hire a scooter or cheap car or something to get my kite and board up the road to the kite spot? And what is the name of the local kite beach? I hear that its an awesome place, good flat water and waves on the outside. If I was bringing only 1 kite, what size would you reckon?

Any info much appreciated!

cheers

Guys if you do a search on www.kiteforum.com on mauritius, theres a bit of info. Theres a guy called Nico who has the kite school in mauritius, I e-mailed him once re info on Mauritius and he was very helpful. His name crops up on most postings to do with Mauritius. The place sounds like a good kite destination, unfortunately our plans to go there din't quite come off, but its on the list

Cheers Cam

Hi Guys

Email the W.A. retailers, as i am sure there are two different retailers that organise trips there..I thought Ian Lane organised a trip there, when Cocos wasn't on due to the airline strike..either last year or year before....

check out the retailers...that's what they are there for....to help you out!

Too far for me to go...better in Fiji!

Rgds

Fiji Sux! I had a nightmare of a time there, and it didn't help having 10 straight days without wind in the middle of the trade-wind season.

Thanks for the info on Mauritius,

Bula!!

cheers guys, hopefully the trip will go ahead. Hi fliya, not too keen on all the noah activity in 'yarpy' land, but sounds like there are some great spots. I have done a couple of surf trips over there so know the coast fairly well but didnt really give a toss about the wind as long as it was off shore and pumping eksa!
ric Ill leave my email address to get those Mauritius details off you.
cheers
