Give orthsynergy a call , got one a few months back , they are specifically designed for people that have had recos like us.

They start at about 700.00 and go up to 1200.00 for a custom.
Well worth it, the ones in the chemist will not give enough support to your knee.
Not sure where you live but othosynergy are in Caringbah on Parraweena rd.

Look them up in the yellow or white pages.

I have just had the same operation. ACL, MCL compression fractures in the bone! Not something i want to go through again. Had the operation a year ago and have only been back on the water about 6 weeks. For protection and peace of mind i wear a Don Joy Armor Extreme knee brace.(The American ski team use these)
This limits the amount of movement the leg can travel, and stops hyperextension which is the most common cause of ACL injuries. You can adjust the limits by using different stops provided.

Whilst i don't believe it has saved my knee in the past 6 weeks (No really bad stacks) it does give you that added confidence whilst out on the water.

The downsde to these braces are their price, about $600 - $800. I looked at it as a small price to pay considering spending another season watching from the beach.

My advice, do lots of rehab (I didn't). Get a brace and be careful for the first couple of months until your leg is strong again.

After 2 x ACL's, 1 x Tenodesis, 1 x Cartlidge repair and 4 other miscellaneous arthroscopies I have found the DonJoy Armour to be the best. Also tried custom CTIs and the Morph. The Armour was easily the best. I also pretty much gave up riding strapped boards as well.

This is where I got mine, it has transformed my ability to continue kitesurfing. My orthopaedic surgeon has seen it and approves its design and is pleased it helps so much.

Look similar, except that the carbon secions go behind the leg and on the CTi2 they go on the front, with straps across the back.
Maybe the Donjoy is a better brace? Maybe I will try one whenI wear out the CTi2.

I would estimate the CTi2 has around 500+hrs of use over 2 seasons now and is holding up well, I have replaced one set of straps ($90).

I ordered a custom from Gall Bros medical. It cost $1010 including shipping. Seemed exxy at the time, but looking back on it now it is cheap.

Before I used it, I would get serious swelling and "fluid" buildup around my knee with pain. This happened with a 1 hr session, maybe even less, then I could not kite until the swelling/pain subsided, which was usually about a week. One session a week was not enough to keep me sane!!
Now I can kite as many times as I like (almost) and I get NO swelling and very little pain.

The main thing it seems to do is give stability and prevent hyperextension. Even small amounts of repeated high frequency, high loaded movement caused by a torn and unrepairable acl and osteo in the joint, can cause massive swelling and pain. Braces seem to prevent this.

I originally injured my knee in a motocross accident 30 years ago, and it was only in the last 7 years that it really started to play up.

Look after your knees children!!
