that was a pretty unlucky gust after a bit of backstallage

its an unhooked launch, i think way safer than a hooked launch as you will not ever get the kite pull follow through of still being hooked in ... but you gotta remember not hold on tight and be ready to let go - learned that one myself.

My peanut radar just went off...

unlucky wind gust?? Are you for real.. Look at the conditions. On a headland with the wind gusty and holed up. Rocks a plenty, guy totally in wrong position to launch. Retard mate throwing him up with no idea.

I bet he learned a valuable lesson though! Did he get his lessons by kitesports or waveslave that's the question.???

Why not walk out to the waters edge and launch there which would put you in beter wind. You were going to need to walk there anyway and haveing a kite over your head walking on rocks is Darwin awards stuff.

thats scary! everything in that scene is wrong. bad he didnt anticipate kite was going to power up! after all he was doing everything to get to 12 ocklock, there is always a boost in power as it travels to 12. poor judgement poor reflexes just dumb. check him pulling the outer line to try to get the wind to flow over the kite he shoukd have known it powered up and had the bar right out. if he was unhooked as well than thats just plain stupid.

As mentioned earlier this has been discussed before on SB. If I recall correctly this was not intended to be an unhooked launch but either the CL failed or unhooked unintentionally.

Also I gather from comments from those who know the spot that there is no good/safe launch there - so he's not alone using that launch area.

Everyone's an expert after the fact

At least he had a helmet and did let go.

Without knowing the area... From what I can see I think he would have been better off having his launch assistant stand on the opposite side ( more where the camera is ) this area looks more elevated and would almost certainly be getting a more constant cleaner wind than down where he is.
Obviously I don't know what's behind the camera ( maybe razor wire, or spiked fence ) but in any case I'd rather get dragged into a concrete carpark ( hmmm that still sounds very nasty ) than into and over the rocks he got flung into......

Again, I don't know the area, but my recollection from the previous discussion of this is that there's a barb wire fence on the opposite side.

I'm not defending the guy but the point I wanted to make was that without being there and knowing the conditions on the day and the whole scenario it's almost impossible to make a balanced assessment.


also, dodgy launch areas at surf spots aren't that rare

Definitely not a good launching spot . From what i can see from the video it looks like the wind could be a bit off shore there is no chop on the ocean. Looks like he"s launching from the edge of the window the kite moves to the right starts to power up then the gust hits . STUPID!!!! Am i the only one seeing this?

if it became unhooked by accident, that fully explains it - it would be instantly oversheeted falling back in window - gust catches it back in powerzone - boom. Riding the west coast of NZ can be like getting in a washer, setting it on spin cycle, throwing that washer off a 30ft waterfall then getting all orifices irrigated by 20 liters of black volcanic cold watery sand all while getting bashed into rocks and boulders being jolted randomly by violent gusts.

Thanks for that graphic description....... I guess ill stay clear of any potential black volcanic enemas and the NZ west coast for that matter
