I think I'm going stir crazy with this heat and lack of wind in Perth! I have taken 10 days leave with the idea of getting some good time on the water, and look at it!
I am a newby to kiting, I'm hanging for that moment everyone tells me will come when it all just clicks into place...
In the meantime, I need to find some pals to link up with for a kite- when the wind is right!
So if youre interested in meeting up at one of the Perth beaches, or even for a few days up in Lancelin in the next week, and can be patient with a girl still doing the learners-walk-of-shame with monotonous regularity, drop me a line.
In the meantime, I'm off to the beach... for a swim! (Do I pack the kite just in case, or is that a jinx!!!).

Only last week I thought I couldn't get things to "click" into place. I had previously only been out in the coastal areas, but figured I wasn't making much progress. I decided to go and find the flatest water possible and did 2 sessions at Applecross and another one Friday when the easterlies were blowing at Pt Walter. I found that having something that you could aim for (or hold a course to on the opposite shore) in both directions without too much chop was the answer and can now safely say I can ride upwind.

I think also that the shallow areas help with being able to hold your ground if you crash your kite and hence don't end up going downwind too far.

I don't think I'll be able to make it for a kite in the north, but if you're down south (Augusta - Marg's - Bunbury) I may be able to help out for this week (forecast for wind isn't looking great).

I'd go one further than puppetonastring.. I'd give the kite a permanent home in the car

Last week when the wind gods blessed us with some decent surf I had school, monday/thursday, work wednesday/saturday and had to burn a few million braincells on friday. Now I got some free time there's no wind! Why... oh why...:(

Well to get back to the subject. Welcome to the sport and just keep doing it it will come sooner or later. Just make sure you get down the the beaches, I've found out that's where most people go wrong. Buy gear and then don't go out just cause they don't have anyone to go there or surf with.. This is wrong, it arrouses contempt in the kiter heart:) Depending on where your "local" spot is just head down there and you'll find there is always someone around to help you out and keep you company. Melville is a good place to go, not too crowded often and nice people.

When I go kiting my rules for not making it obvious I'm out on the water are.....always put gear and empty bags in the boot, don't take valuables but if unavoidable find somewhere good to hide credit cards etc and do this before you get to the beach!, take your key with you (I ride with mine under my wetsuit top on a lanyard) and leave your glove box open.

If any characters look in they'll see nothing worth breaking in for and hopefully not bother!

yep I wish I had done a lot more downwinders early on, they are definately less stress and get the skills up pronto. The coast from Flozzer/City Beach to Brighton is tops. Great for a realxed low wind sesh also. No punters, lots abeach, waves, dolphins, UFOs, commets - oh and waves too.

I am looking for a regular downwind bud but haven't seemed to be able to attract as much interest Hmm I don't have bumps as attractive as the female of the species (well not to me anyhoo) but perhaps if I change my sign on to Big Reg Grundies or Mr Y Fronto LOL

A word to the wise though if you have only one kite, don't get caught half way with a set up too big for the conditions, as happened to me 1st time. Set off in low winds with a 15.5m (13-18 kts) all good 20mins later its more like 18-23 kts and serious white knuckle fever!! Geez it was funny later though - and hey I can now tie my shoelaces without bending over I think William (the cor pork chappy from Seth Afro) is still laughing about it .

Hopefully you are a book wormy type with a mono brow and a little too hairsuite on the back (too much chunky soup) as my wifey would probably prefer that . If not well wifey will just have to take up kiting!

Hey Nic, I have a couple of friends that have just started recently and still at the walk-of-shame stage. I keep an eye out for them, in case they get into trouble, so they don't have to worry about losing their board, and have swam out to teach a self-resuce once too. We normally go to Leighton beach, and will start doing some downwinders to Cott or Swanbourne soon. PM me if you want to meet up for a kite.

ive just started kitin as well and i,m getting a wee bit frustrated - ive had 5 lessons but i cant seem to grasp the concept.
ive bought myself a 9m DNA and a board and a really grouse harness but i,m struggling. in this thread people have mentioned downwinders.
what the hells a downwinder?
if someone wants to show me then i,d be stoked and i,d be happy to shout them a beer at the downwind end??!!
