they work but are dangerous in westerlies(plenty of downwind obstacles like powerlines ),plus you will be schlogging aound in mud.

I'd heard that the lakes around Forster were okay during winter?

lakes around foster are apparently excellent in winter, group up there that runs lessons called cross shore (x shore) i have had 2 kiteboarding weekends there just recently came back from one. its sorta a 2 day lesson weekend (i recommend) and thats accommodation food lessons on both days. and the best thing for beginning is its in water thats only chest high deep so good when learning to relaunch.

I agree with mr float. Check out the xshore website for info.

www.xshore.com.au

Glen and Michelle have recently opened a shop here in Port Macquarie and the service is great, only to happy to assist with any aspect of kiting. I've been on one of the weekend deals and they are great value, Two or three days of kiting tuition, accommodation and meals all in the price. No wind go wakeboarding behind his IRB. It's a top weekend.

Check it out!

The board crazy crew at newy run lessons all year around and love those dangerous westerly winds, because they can teach you in beautiful smooth flat water. You'll have to book ahead though.
As this time of year they get alot of people up from sydney wanting to learn.
