hi all, just wondering if any of you know or can recomend any decent kite schools in and around perth?

and how many lessons should i get? i've never been kitesurfing before but have been landboarding back in the uk for over a year now
so i know how to fly a de-power kite and i own a 13m v1... so would 1/2 lesson do or do you think i can just get away without having any and just go buy a board and learn on my own?

thanks.

Sounds like you could do alright without lessons.

But,do you know how to relaunch on water?
Self rescue?etc.

get a lesson from a reputable instructor, they will know which parts to skip considering your experience.

go and see the guys at australian kite school, they are at pinneroo point (just south of mullaloo), they'll be able to point you in the right direction with what you need to do.

Rob Gannon is also very good.

He operates at Mullalloo and I have seen hime give lessons to a bloke with a PL Guerilla so he's not a LEI snob.

Can't find his number but call Hold the Line Kites in Wembley - 9387 5676 - for it.

cheers guys for the quick reponse, think it would be prob best to have a lesson as i've never kited in the water so learning how to self rescue and water relaunching would be worth it. i'll check those guys out.

thanks again.

Neil rides Venoms, is the best repairer in WA and there is a guy who does lesson for him that teaches with PL kites and inflatos.
You need to learn things that are specific to Venoms, the inflato based instructors will not know how to help you with a Venom.
Self rescue, and pack down, etc, are different with Venosm than inflatos.

hi guys, has anyone dealt with SOS surf company in fremantle??

they seem to do the cheapest lessons... at $140
i've had a look at robs website and he charges $180
and a few other places around are like $200

so if i could save i abit would be better, as need to get a board after so every bit counts.

thanks,
henry.

Back in late 94 when I did lessons Rob charged $150 for 2 lessons.

Don't know if this is still how he works but he wasn't concerned at all about going over time as long as you progressed to the next level. One lesson I had went for nearly 3 hours as he didn't have booking hot on the heels that day (weekdays are cool for this).

Tops bloke too.

go with the guy who has the most experience with the kites you plan to use. those extra dollars will be cheap as when you convert the guys experience into amount of frustration avoided.

Or you could buy some real kites and then learn from anybody

Hey Brewer,

I recently did the 2hr lesson for $140 with SOS, but that is with another student too so they were charging $140/hr. My instructor was Toby (I think) and I thought he did a good job. I only took the one lesson then bought my gear and have been learning by myself since then. I would highly recommend getting at least one lesson from someone qualified, you have to know the safety side of kiting on the water.

But if you already have kiting skills you would be better off getting a solo lesson and preferably from someone familiar with your style of kite.

just so you know:
our winter winds are not like the winter winds in the UK.
I would say about 70 % of people do not kite in winter in perth - if i get desperate enough (and it looks like it will be over 15 or under 30) i will be out there, but its generally gusty gusty gusty.

Also most people flock to the ocean instead of the river if they go out.

Hi Henry,

I had plenty of experience in kiting on land before coming to Perth and Learning to Kitesurf, this summer. Rob gave me lessons, I'd recommend him to you as he does teach on Venoms and he'll fast track your sessions according to your experience. It should be well worth the cash, and you can always catch him up at Mullaloo if you need refreshers, or to pick his brains!

by the way I fly inflatables and foils.

Gee thanks overpowered.
I was about to fork out good money for lessons but now that you have passed on all this invaluable info I can just head out into the winter squalls and save heaps.
You are a genius.
A few queries though ?

Just read up on how to water relaunch your chosen kite and go practice in waist deep water.

Would the shallow end of my pool be OK or should I go to the farmers dam across the road ? Both are about waist deep ?
AND - Should I be in waist deep water or my kite ?
Oh dear this is a bit of a tricky one !

Self rescue is easy. You need to wrap enough of the leash line not the leash, lol, around your bar to depower the kite and then wrap the rest of your lines up till you are at your kite, tie them off.

Im a bit confused here (lol) What leash line should I wrap up ? I'm not using a suicide leash so I'm guessing you mean my board leash ? because I wont be needing that again till I go out next time, will I ?
And Im guessing that if I have to wrap up my board leash round my bar its so I can wrap my kite lines around my board until Im at my kite ? Is that right ?

Then grab each end of your kite, one in one hand and the other in the other, they normally have handles. Make a sail and off you go.

Yep - too easy. But if my board leash is all wrapped up what hand do I use to hold onto my board ???
And just what kite brands have handles ? because mine doesnt ? Did I buy the wrong brand - Oh dear I hope not !

Bodydragging is just that dragging your body, you can shape and stiffen your body in such a way to make a crude hydrofoil to oppose the kite and even go upwind.

Great. I thought body-dragging meant dragging your body. Yeah I'm obviously going to be good at this sport.
But Hey ! What stiff shapes should I try first do you reckon ? Erect type stiff is obviously a problem for most or they would stay standing up ? Should I practice a few different lying down shapes behind my ute a few times first ? Would that help ?

Just what research documents are you quoting here ?
Id suggest not 'most' but 'too many'. But then even one would be too many.

Like your avatar would suggest - out of the mouths of babes comes dribble.
Confuscous say "If you havent got anything sensible to say - shut the fk up."

Go get lessons Brewer its just plain common sense.

Hi Brewer,

It's definately a good idea to get some lessons before venturing out into the winter gusterlies. Problem is I think most schools have closed for the winter, I know we have.

I don't care who you get lessons from, just as long as you know what you are doing. Please do not ride at our beach if you are going to go out in winter with no lessons, we can ill afford a major medical emergency and Joondalup council is trying to promote that part of their shire as a fun safe place to recreate for all persons.

Sometimes the most sensible decision in learning is not to go out when you are out of your comfort zone ..... especially in winter.

Good winds,

Roll on Spring !!

Oops, missed the bit about the Venom.

Thats a mattress isn't it?

Forget my advice about the water re launching.
Concentrate on self rescue, and do some serious swimming training.
Whenever I've seen those babies hit the drink, the hapless owner has had a long swim in !
