No, it's in the middle of town, on the south shore.

I saw them too, very jealous, though they were working a bit for power. Could have been a flysurfer from level 28 of the AMP building, not entirely sure.

Righto - that's it!! I am packin my kit everyday from now on so I can scam a quick trip from East perth to Sth shore for a lunchtime quickie!!

Is this a legal/legit spot or is there likely to be heat from water authorities?

guy was on a Cabrinah if it's the same one (and a twin tip with a leggy...cringe...!)
just south of where the ferries come in and north of the surf cats...looked like a got spot on an easterly and lots of lawn to launch and land
do people not normally kite here? are you allowed too?

I recall it being mentioned here well over a year ago, so out of range of the search tool. Can't remember exactly what was said, but don't recall there being any reason not to kite there.

I work on Adelaide Terrace and I wish there was a launch area on the North side, I could put the wettie on in the office and walk down for a lunch time session.

Not sure why you'd wear a leggy when its <1m deep.

According to the Perth Water Boating Guide (http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/mar_rb_swanriver_guide_2007.pdf),

No restrictions on water craft other then keeping clear of the commercial water ski area near the Narrows Bridge and the Water Ski assocations private area near Heirisson Island.

I walk home often after work on the South Perth side and the Easterly is often strong and clean. I'm keen, just need someone to launch and land me .

Cheers.

Who watches Ch 10 news at 5? you know the weather watch? try kiting in the view of that cam that does the afternoon cloudwatch over the narrows (or was it the other bridge?) It'd be pretty good publicity.

Saw some window washing clowns once, they found the cam and did the 'W' western front thingy.

Sorry everyone but I kited here over 2 years ago and as I was the only one out that time and every time since ,I declare it my local spot and no one else can use it without my permission. As the season seems to be ending I will be going back to my local soon so I would appreciate everyone to go away and not talk about it. Thank you

Now I am very curious about this, I have always wanted to try to kite off the South Perth foreshore (given its a 2min drive from home!) but just always assumed it was off limits.

When I look at the link to the boating guide, this area is described as an 8knot zone, does anyone know if this applies to all water craft, or just powered craft?

The guide also defines all coastal areas for 200m offshore to be an 8 knot zone, but shows Melville kite beach as Open Water, so does that mean at 90% of our spots we need to keep it down to less than 8 knots!!!!

I suspect I couldnt keep it to that speed if I tried really, really hard !

I've kited there many times - bottom is a bit muddy with sharp shells, used needles, broken bottles, etc but the wind's OK in E to NE.

Could get some great photos with the city in the background - this is the only one I have - from early 2001!

I can imagine a good shot in the morning light of a jump with the city below the rider.

I believe the 8 knot limit applies to the ferry channel only but check the Sth Perth boat ramp for a detailed map. Obviously a very good idea to keep out of the ferry channel!

I've also launched on the city side near the helipad (after talking to the guys who use it) and kited N Herrison Island a few times in SE. It wasn't bad - we were considering it as an option for the Gravity Games because the organizers wanted everything to be seen from McCallum Park - unfortunately it got all too hard & kiting got axed in the third year :-(

No, the whole of Perth Water is an 8 knot limit but I think they turn a blind eye to sail craft as long as they are not being a nuisance. The surf cats are often going much faster then that. The middle bit roughly between the Barrack St Jetty and the cats is only 1-2 foot deep in places, so, the only vessels you would encounter there are the surf cats and the odd kayaker.

Cheers.

I'm sure it's not kited that often as it isn't a great spot. Gusty wind, crap on the bottom to cut your feet open with and no beach sand to launch from.... Also right next to the shore is the walking lane which is allways full of innocent bystanders/ bikes and pets so plenty of fodder to get your lines wrapped around during setup / landing unless it's a quite day
