People,
After 2 glorious kiting seasons and 5 kites (6 counting my sisters 7m crossbow).. and one prolimit waste harness.... I have been getting lower back pain of late... this is not a good thing and have had a 6 day no kiting spell to try to heal it.. (which is good as wind not been great in perth) ... now as today is my birthday I would like to hit the north wester and big swell forecast for tomorrow... but back is of concern...

anyone recommend changing to a seat harness or even the dakine shorts which look more like a seat harness...? for the purpose of saving my all important lower back.

Thanks!

I could not comment on the seat harness although I have a North AirBack harness and I love it.
The air bag in the lower back region moulds and creates a more even pressure and i have not had back problems like i did with my last Dkine pyro harness

Sounds like your bar might need some adjustments (shorten the centre line), like you are stretching for the bar or using a strange position when kiting. The harness itself doesn't give backpain it's the way you use it but I would still recommend a new harness. Pat Love make, IMHO, the best ones and they also look quite good!

Had the same problem with lower back pain. I got the Dakine Fusion which is pretty much the same as the shorts harness. Best thing I ever did - no more back pain and comfy as. I don't have any problems with harness riding up or groin chafing but I always wear 2mm wettie shorts.

i use a seat, although it's avery basic model, and I still get lower back pain. i have always assumed my back pain is from just pumping up the kite.
but i'm not lazy enough to get an electric pump..............yet.
I have suspected my trim line is a bit long for the smaller kites that i use now. I will shorten it and hopefully get less pain.

Let's put it in perspective: it doesn't matter what type of harness you use, the fact is that the the spinal cord gets a lot of inpact during kitesurfing: large waves, small ripple, jumps, you name it...
A good back support may help, however, if back pain is there, you better seek professional advice (chiropractor, physioterapist maybe an orthopedic surgeon specialised in spinal cord).
This is a very serious issue, I would not take it easy as, if not treated correctly may cripple you for life.
I know how hard is to stay on the side when the wind is there and others have fun on the water, but health is more important, so do yourself a favor and seek advice.
Good luck

My advise for you, as i have been in similar situation, get checked by your GP or chiro to make sure your back is still in its normal shape - upgrade to a brand new harness but make sure you try every harness on, waist, seat shorts whatever, but make sure you get the one that fits best and has the most support for your back.
happy kiting

Dave Spruce Right on man - my hyper type depower was too long until I recently pulled the nose down all the way 2 knots which improoved thing - but on max depower which is often as I always go too large is still a long reach....

I don't think i need a new waste harness the prolimit is pretty supportive and padded - I am gonna try seat harness and see.... + I have had a 6 day break which has improved things....

Just thought I'd give you the link to a topic I started last week about harnesses Hawaii. I suffered from bad back for 10 years before being paralized and have emergency op. I can't stress by typing how important it is to seek medical advice. I will say one thing don't sit around resting keep walking as much as you can. It's the least stress on the back. If you need to rest lay flat on back with knees bent.

Who was that said Mr Spruce isn't constructive in a different thread.

Nice tip Dave I'll have to check mine when setting up, cheers.

Very important to learn to ride many different positions early so you work all parts evenly I thunk. Riding more powered and always shifting your wieght will develop good riding posture that can suite your back situation.

Kiteloops are not recommended if you are going to crash with your feet on the board...............ouch. And, you must learn to land jumps softly early.

Ooor... just learn to ride the the proper position.. Soo many people I've seen out there bending over and reaching for the bar with legs bent.. It's NOT the way to go! Not only does it look terrible (Yes I will from now on refer EVERY thread to the "don't-look-good-while-you're-kiting-thread") it also damages your back like hell and will set you back in terms of performance and safety..

I used to have the same problem back when I started kiting... Had hell of a pain in my back after every session because I was reaching for the bar at max depower. Shortened the centre-line.. problem solved..

Especially thinking about the bow bars where you have to be Goliath to reach the bar full depowered (I am David so this problem doesn't affect me) Mod 'em and you'll have a more pleasent time out there

Had the same problem, no pain in the back, but with the Switchblade I was always complaining about over-reach and it was preventing me from keeping a comfortable posture.
