No, but 3 of us saw a little 6 footer at Wanda yesterday.
Thankfully he was too busy chasing fish to pay any attention to me, because I rode straight over him!
I can't help but feel a bit nervous when there is another story on the news about a shark attack every week...

Mad Dog looks like a trip up the coast is on if this southerly comes in you keen, spoke to Matty and it looks like its Game on, the Jlo is hanging out to try all his new gear in the surf, the Georges is also game on and so am I.

Danza, did I tell you about the shark that had me almost aqua planning back to shore up the North coast in Jan... This thing was as long as a commodore station wagon and no more than 15m from me.... I guess that's what happens when you surf by your self on 7 miles of deserted beach with only 2 fisho's 50m's from you burling up the water ..... That's 3 encounters with sharks this summer..... what's with this shark shild thing?

The shield sends out an electrical pulse 6 mtrs around you , it annoys the crap out of sharks, they wont come near you, alot of surfers are buying them now , you strap it around your leg and it replaces your leash.

You know I have a fear of sharks so I bought this , only wear it when I kite alone in sharky areas and while Im spearfishing.Might have to put it back on with that big sucker cruising around knowing my luck I will probably be body dragging and come face to face with it.

It is never fun when you hear your local spot with a large shark in the vacinity. I spend far to much time body dragging and dangling out the back at Dolls. I have a fat arse and would be a very tasty meal.

Hey Daniel, if I kite really close to you, am I protected too????
-Speaking of body dragging...Remember "the big jelly fish" that "bumped" into me few weeks ago when I was recovering my board?... Never body dragged so damn fast in my entire life!!! But I still like to think it was just "a big jelly fish"... Even if my reason keeps on telling me that a jelly fish is supposed to be soft... and that they don't really bump into you...Oh well, it was just my imagination... Wasn't it???-
I've a tip for you though!... the best shark shield ever! ...
Just kite where there are a lot of surfers!!!!
When I was down the coast two weeks ago, I was told by locals there was a bronze whaler out... Sharks in this country are like spiders: you never know which one is going to kill you!!! Are bronze whaler any dangerous???

I dont think i would waste my money on a shark shield, I am not convinced they work, whites eat anything, engines on boats etc when they are in a frenzy, when they are not they just cruise around. An ab diver a couple of years ago got taken by a white wearing a shield, the company released a press statement saying that particular model had just been superseeded, I wonder why?? Save your cash and just be aware of whats around.

Dont need a shark shield.

Being scared of a shark attack will make you a better Kiter.........Learn not to crash!

I wouldnt be worried about looking out for sharks. You should be keeping an eye out for other kiters.....some of them are more dangerous!!!!!

if you're going to get a shark shield, the model you will probably want is the "freedom 4". it's the most compact and has about 4 hr battery life.

some people say they attract sharks, i would say more people who wear them get away with seeing sharks.

i never heard of anyone getting eaten while wearing one though.

you can sometimes pick them up for $400-$500.

i think they are manufactured in Adelaide where they get a few big sharks.

I think you also need to be wearing a wettie (boardies in or out shouldn't matter.) Other wise you get a weeny bit of a shock from it.

oh, and i don't wear one, looked into it a bit but haven't had anything scary enough yet.

Oh great....
Sometimes you're just better off not knowing, really...

Don't you worry Daniel: we eat way too much crap to be any tasty to them, we're not written down the menu (they only eat organical food... we're full of chemicals!).... We don't have enough fat to be tender, really... (I mean... most of us...).
And if you consider the "accident" ("oh, a seal... yum.... Let's have a bite...Yuck... this is disgusting, no way I'm finishing my plate!" (and the lucky "seal" only lost half of his body... )) I'm telling you, surfer's make nicer bait than us...
I agree with the others, look at the bright side: sharks make you improve!

Bowski, there was a guy wearning a shark pod (early model of the shark shield) who had his leg taken off by a shark about 5 years ago off Adelaide. The coronial report is online, extensive, and worth the read. The findings of the Coronor was that the guy had not been using it effectively. He typically had it turned off while on the bottom allowing the shark to circle and get aroused. When he rose to the surface the electrical terminal on the top of is air tank regulator was sticking out of the water at the time of the attack, hence the unit was probably not functioning.

I bought a Freedom4 about 2 years ago. Very happy with it. There's a lot of annecdotal stories from local divers and Navy blokes around Perth who swear by them. Just ask around. They don't interfere with my kiting at all, except to occasionally get a tickle in my trailing foot if it gets touched by the antenna. It's actually reassuring to know its working. I just adjust my board angle. Wearing a wet suit makes no difference at all as the water is what conducts electricity and you're not wearing a dry suit.

Would certainly recommend using one if you're constantly thinking about sharks. It's help me enjoy the sport and do a lot more than I would otherwise. I posted a review for kiters about 2 seasons ago in the Kitesurfing/Gear Review section of seabreeze.
