After a few lessons i got the opportunity to take out my newly acquired 14m Vegas 04 - supervised by a kiting mate.

The wind didn’t cooperate at all as it went from 15kts to 24 gusting to 26 in about 30min. So obviously i put the kite back in the car - and of course the wind dropped down again so i set back up and by the time i got out again there was very little left of the wind (all in the space of 40min). I managed to get a few body drags out in the water - which was good fun but i was intending to hone some board skills but the wind just wasn't there.

After about an hour of just having a laugh in the the wind dropped pretty low and the kite fell out of the sky. I moved rapidly upwind to try and catch it - but there just wasn’t enough wind and the lines had lost more distance than i could make up. I remeber thinking "Ohhh ****e this is bad" actually i think i yelled it :). Then about 1m off the ground the kite gripped and i was flung 3 or so m in the air (well thats what if felt like - superman style) and I landed on my bar - got a nice cricket ball bruise on my leg for my trouble. So close to loosing all chances of ever having kids - one inch and i would still be down at the beach contemplating suicide. Pretty amusing now - i must have looked dern confused.

Just thought all the other newbs out there would be amused by my damaged pride - but ill be out there tomorrow battling it out. Say G'day if your riding in Brighton Victoria & don’t say i didn’t warn you to give me a wide girth Im the bright orange 14m vegas.

Wind 1 = Hobbling Alex -1

Al

p.s if anyone has a Ocean Rodeo Zen 135 lmk as i would love to know how they handle - thinking about picking one up tomorrow.
I have a snowboard background so is this board suitable for rapid advancement and choppy conditions?

Dude. I can totally relate.

Its funny that after staring impotence in the eye, we still go for a kite the next day.

Must be something about the sport...............

hard lesson mate. my experience with larger kites luffing anywhere near the shore or solid obstacles - pull the safety even as the thing is fluttering down, and sort out the mess on your feet and with 'nads intact. If you have time to yell anything you have time to pull the ripcord!

Keep at it, you'll look back and laugh in a month or two as you blast across the pristine waters of port phillip bay

A tip for next time.

And there will be a next time.

once the kite is spinning down don't try to save it, but try to keep lines loose all the way down.

this means kite hits at slowest speed and you don't get the yank.

best winds

cheers for the tips - other newbs i hope it helps.

in my lessons when i was in low winds i was taught to react the way that i did in this case but that was only with a 10m kite and in really ****e winds - i was never told the appopriate response - lesson learnt the hard way.

Im already laughing about it now - just about to take my kite for another session in 15knts......this time i'll have my hand on the quick release as soon as that bad boy starts to drop outa the sky.

if the lines are loose like that you can unhook, reducing the chance of loosing your chicken loop

you gotta make a judgement call, sometimes you can still save it.

either run at it or run away from it. Dont stand still. 90% of the time you can still saved it unlessyou luffed it big time.
