I am a keen kiter and hate to voice my personal opinion, but so many families use currumbin alley and as much as I hate to admit it they are probably right.

The only way to make this happen is to change legislation to force kiters to get shipping licences (can you believe this ****..you have got to be joking). This will mean that all kiters must be 200m or more away from any swimmers. Now a shipping licence cost money and is a pain in the arse to get. I think the idea is to force us out of Currumbin. I doubt the requirement of a shipping licence would be enforced anywhere else. Just were the powers that be decide they do not want kiters.

I do not know how this will be enforced. It does not seem practical to me but that is the latest folks. It is quite clever actually. This will take a long time to happen perhaps a year. It would seem the dragon of city hall has been awoken and is staring straight at us.

Great idea Duke, you might get really lucky and put someone else in a wheel chair. Then you'd be having a real good time.

Richo - How did the old girl get cleaned up originally?? I missed that story if it ever made it onto this forum.

BenDoJenge, this was an accident that happened on the beach.Accidents happen in every sport!my view is not to put more people in wheelchairs, but stop people flying powerfull kites on the beach in populated areas.i dont think they should punish everyone for a accident.....

Richo I reckon contact AKSA and ask for help / WAKSA could be worth contacting for some advcice??,WAKSA have dealt with an impending ban succesfully before but the ban never involved an actual physical incident,

I cant stress the importance of the Currumbin crew getting together and uniting to form some kind of working group as suggested by Richo

Yeah Richo. I will always have a job for a well credentialled crash test dummy.

Hope Currumbin doesn't get banned as all the guys will then find out about Kite Island and invade one of the best spots on he coast.

all jokes aside.
currumbin is a small estuary ,with swimmers of all ages, watercraft users and lifeguards and vmr looking on.
kiters are unfortunately an accident that happened.
overcrowding of beginners and showoffs has led to the inevitable.

yeh well we all knew this wasn't too far away...and yep getting all the kiters together as a unified group with a voice is the only way to negotiate with council about this...

The 'greyness' to this whole issue is tho that the Alley is not a safe swimming area (as per all the huge sign posts) BUT....cause people always get swept out to sea there, they have HAD to put in some lifesavers (whom i might add dont seem to hate us kiters as i've quite often had them stop on their jetski's and boats to return my board to me), so people now think its a safe swimming beach, which its NOT.

The Gold Coast is full of SAFE SWIMMING beaches, but still people choose to go to the Alley, even tho its sign posted as dangerous.

I have to admit - i find it amazing that families come down to the Alley and set themselves up for the day on the kiting launch beach...People dont even realise whats going on around them. I dont understand why they wouldn't set up on the other side (right near the lifeguards) and away from the kiters.

I think the Alley has room for both, Kiters beach (u know where it is) and all other beach goers setup on the other side of the carpark (where most people go anyway)

Maybe us Kiters need to put it to the council for some more signage warning people about the kiting activities (launching and landing of kites) and designate areas for us both.

We would be able to share the area as there is BEACH SPACE FOR BOTH (kiters and families - keeping to their relative beaches) and Kiting is only to be outside in the surf zone and inside the Estuary (where very few people swim anyway) and NO KITING out front of where the life guards patrol and the surf schools operate.

This seems like a reasonable compromise to me....Anyway, i've upped a quick pic of what i think WOULD be fair - i'm sure it has holes and i welcome more input/criticism to this.(and its only MY opinion)www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=811&shownew=on

Another factor is....When it gets really windy, most the beach goers leave anyway, so why should the sport be banned when the wind is up and the beach/water is predominately empty ?

anyway, thats all i can think to write at the moment

om every one lay off the councillor . Ok once more...department of transport not council has any power in this regard.

holy hell leave her alone and focus on good friendly positive relations. Ringing up and hasseling the councilor will only harden her resolve against us.

You will have plenty of warning before any legislation is being passed. Then and only then do you get nasty. Right now we need friends in high places.

If the boys get themselves organised this will turn out ok.

fitzy you just let me know when you want me on the payrole and i will put the crash test helmet on ad rip

Flashing back to my crusty old days in the merchant navy [}:)] The difference between a ship and a boat is that the ship requires assistance berthing, ie tug/pilot. What about a submarine? Submarines are boats (eg U-boat) because they don't carry life-boats. So a ship can carry a boat but not vice versa.

i see what you mean but you don't understand the circumstances im talking about. When you go kiteboarding where no one ever usually swims people will rock u to check it out. If you chose to kite on a normally crowded beach area then deal with, you are right. If swimmers are just moving towards the kites then it is diferent. Hence me saying that swimmers like to hang around kiteboarders.

Some people think its their duty to swimwhere you are kiting to help retrieve your board. When you are kiting in a well recognised kiting spot where people would not normally swim then it is how i originally said it to be. I'm not telling swimmers to F@CK off just a bit of understanding and public education would go a long way, some people are idiots.

What do you have to say to that, btw my response didnt have much attitude did it??

unfortunately we still do not know the full facts on this matter,
perhaps no-one should get heated and for the time being we should all steer clear of the flat water inner section of currumbin.
obviously a big ask for the short sighted.
but once it's gone it's bluddy gone.
i'm sure all vmr and the general public want is for us to not take over the small inner beach and estuary and stay out in the outer break like every other high speed water user has been legislated to do.
water police told me two years ago that currumbin is a six knot zone for "vessels" and if the matter comes up, then legislation will be passed to enforce this to new unclassified watersports such as ours.
currently we are not a vessel but a watersports accessory(e.g. wakeboard, surfboard)
so before this goes to court, will every one heed this as a time to get some common sense and try to convince the powers that be that we are not a menace, but a responsible and legitimate part of the community.
e.g. grow up all of ya's

When I as was more involved in AKSA, we were told that Waterways in Vic, NSW and Qld had classified kitesurfers as "vessels", and as far as I know that is still the case.

So if the authorities want to go down this road it will be very easy. Waterways officers have the ability to confiscate gear and to dish out susbstantial fines, etc.

There is one way you will hang on to access at the alley, Noosa river mouth, the pasage at Caloundra, etc it to form local kiter groups/clubs. Make sure you lobby the sport loving members of the local councils, the surf clubs etc, meet and greet as many other local beach user groups mas possible. Identify those that have a positive view of kiteboarding, and side with them to inform the Local Council that all the locally based kiters are members of AKSA or QKSA, etc and all carry public liability insurance, and all respect local rules.

Then you need to enforce sensible spot sharing rules. By enforce I mean approach anyone causing a problem, with a least a few locals as a group, and let them know that access is under threat from people doing what they are or were doing. Be forceful, reasonable and pleasant at all times, 99% of the time people will respond, if there is an incident caused by someone that was warned, it is unlikely any ban would ensue.
Communication is key to retaining access.

Currumbin is too good to lose!

Maybe a good idea to stress the importance of Currumbin not only for local's but also Tourist's (domestic and many internationals) who come to the coast just for Kite-surfing... they love to promote tourism on the Goldie...

Sorry. Your post did not really have attitude.

I admit it is annoying that beach users will put themselves in the zone sometimes. Swimmers, surfers, and my pet hate, beach fishermen !
Unfortunately though,we have to respect the publics right to be using a public beach in safety.

So here we are now with the president of the AKSA after the VMR Meeting.
Local kiters attending: John Warren, Gene Phoenix
President AKSA: Beaver
The results of the meeting with the VMR are:
Concerns about safety of kitesurfing in all areas which will result in banning of the sport by QLD Transport enforced by the Water Police.
VMR believes we need to create an identity as a sub division of AKSA
ie: Kitesurf Community Association (KCA)to represent the community in regards to any concerns by authorities.
VMR has started the process to change the current legislation in regards to kitesurfing within QLD. This means there is the chance it could affect every kitesurf location in the state.
We believe in order to attend to these concern we have to:
Arrange for AKSA to have 2 head representatives from the Kitesurf Community Association. It would be of benefit if these members had experience in dealing with local water authorities.
The current Association includes:
Gene Phoenix, John Warren, Matt Tobin, Paul Jackson, Daniel Bevan (Beaver)
This association is holding a meeting to discuss this and other issues further. Details are as follows:
Date: Wed 21 Dec 2005
Time: 7pm
Place: Nobby's Surf Club - Nobby Beach

Please call Gene - 0403 130 130 for further information.

Everyone is welcome. Please attend so we can listen to your opinion and work together to save our right to kite.

Also a big THANK YOU to everyone who was able to attend todays meeting.
