Just got back from aitutaki in the cook islands this morning, its about 1hr flight from rarotonga.Got to air raro and we were ready for the excess charge but nothing!!! we were so stoked, even if they do charge you its only $3.50 per kg over. If you have international connection they are pretty happy to let a few kgs go un noticed.
Aitutaki is heaven! what a place we had 6 windy days out of 7 and it never dropped under 20knts, 2 days over 30 knts and 3 days about 25knts and 1 day about nice 20-22knts. One foot is very nice but go to honeymoon island! this spot will blow your mind. We did 11km downwinders 3 days in a row from one foot after kiting there for hours. Downwinder took us about 45mins. You can go see Moeua at inano who will take you out to one foot in his boat and he will follow you home. He charged us $30 per person min of 4 each trip. If you take a day trip with tour operator they will charge about $65 but will only give about 1 hour to kite one foot island.
You can also just walk from your bungalow at inano and go kiting off the sand spit on the aitutaki lagoon resort and spa island, its about 200m walk and a short walk thru waist deep water over to the sand spit. We kited there the first day and kited there at the end of our downwinders for a while so all the locals could come out and see, the locals are the most friendlist people ive ever met. Its more choppy there and some reefy sections, mixed with sandy spots.

Moeua at inano can also take you to honeymooners island. There was a couple of kiwi's that rocked up on our 2nd last day and they came out with us aswell. Inano is a gem spot for kiters as Veia and Moeua are such nice people and love the sport. Cheap accom aswell, nice and clean & safe. We left our gear outside on the deck and the door unlocked. They have got 2 person bungalows and also a 5 person bungalow, which is the one we stayed in.
You can hire a scooter to get around the island, about $20-$25 per day. You have to go up to the summit and check out the view of the whole lagoon, its an amazing site.
Take heaps of mozzie spray and coils to burn!! If the wind stops the mozzies are bad.
We found eating out cheaper then buying from local grocery store. Boat shed near inano is great for feed, about $15 main for dinner and lunch starts at $5.
We took 10m, 12m and 14m kites and used them all, mostly the 10 and 12.
Honeymooners island is a massive sand spit and its glassy flat and waist deep for nearly 1km!! Not joking. One foot is very nice aswell, bit more choppy but easy to downwind from there.
No need for booties, sweet sandy bottom. The water was unbeliveable!! The clearest ive eva seen from any island ive been to. Great fishing and the water for snorkelling was in a league of its own.

Hope this helps. Oh yeh, stay away from the samade island night on tuesday, its a rip off for $35 buffet but dance show was cool.
You can fly virgin or air NZ to rarotonga and then get a small domestic flight on air raro from rarotonga to aitutaki.

We all had the best trip eva and think we will go back again next year.

Good luck choosing your holiday.

One of us will post some photos when we get a chance.

xx angie
