Hi guys just wondering if your getting many bow or flat kites on the beaches over in oz
over here in auckland it seems a lot of intermediate riders are switching to them mainley cause its so gusty and what would normally be a ****ty sesh can become a lot more enjoyable. a typical day can have winds of 15 kn gusting to the high 20's
when ever i've ridden in oz the winds always seem more constant so i
wonder if a 'c' kite is still the better option.

From my experience...the people I speak with who don't have a bow (beginners to intermediate ) are planning on getting one and the people with one are planning on getting a second

what are you guys on crack r what!!!! chill out!!!

bows rock!!! n only people who are technophobes would say such crap about em. Bows are way different from c kites, but overall, i think anything that makes the sport more fun, easyer and safer, is a good thing.... (and doesnt have to be in the form of a bow kite), i love kites in general and ride both c and bow kites, but have to say that my bow kite is way more forgiving in angry conditions, and is heaps easyer to learn new stuff on....

ive lived and worked in NZ and know how the winds can be, totaly crazy!!! i expect to be back there this year and will be taking a 8 or 9 mtr bow kite with me as i know thats just what works for me :)

My info points to Bow type kites accounting for about a third of Kite sales worldwide.

And that is a figure that has levelled out already.

The ability of many of the 06 'C' kites to deliver the same depower and range features attributed to Bow type kites, and retain the traditional C advantages, has paid answer to the Technology hype.

There are characteristics of Bow Types that a proportion of the kiting population will like and will suit. Just as the other 2/3ds
will prefer C technology.

So the answer to which type of kite, should be, "fly what you like".
and don't buy until you have tried both.

I dont see what the C advantage is? care to elaborate.

This season I have seen 5 06 rhino riders (2 sponsered), 2 06 fuel riders (both sponsored), 1 06 torch rider (sponsered), 1 impact rider (sponsored) 4 06 sonic riders (all payed themselves), 1 halo rider (payed himself), 1 turbo diesel rider (payed himself), ~25 crossbow riders (1 sponsored dale and wsp dan rest payed them self, many with 2+ bows each)

31 bow riders with 2 team riders
9 06 C riders with 6 sponsored. 3 of these couldnt ride bows because their brand doesnt make them.

well if the national standard is anything to go off.....

i think there was about 6/7 ppl on bows during the nats this year, they were all crossbows ( correct me if there were any others out there), and the other 40-50 people were on c shape kites.
the main advantage of going c shape is that there are no bridles to get tangled, and there is a 5th line to hang your kite off if you do get tangled so you can get back

The nationals isn't representative of the general kitesurfing public.

**** I would ride a C kite if I got one for free. But alas I pay for mine, and like to get the best for my money.

That's a fair comment. Most beginners and average joe riders would be mad to be on anything else if they had the choice.

Expert riders might care about the few advantages that C-kites have but the rest of us would barely notice the difference.

In addition, the rest of us get to have so much more productive sessions that we will end up ripping. Everything is so much easier to do on a bow kite.

fair enough, maybe in perth where the water is flat everwhere, and you can stand up, you might see 50% bows on a very bowey day....

but if you come over the "other side" of the continent whilst still popular there are far more arcs & peter lynns flying around than bows, you might see the odd 2 or 3 out and the rest are c shape or
air mattersses. Tha fact is they have pros and cons, like c shape, like ram airs, they all have +'s and -s, but IMO I would much rather see a beginner on a kite that can't get bridles tangled, and when you engage your safety have a chance it won't work 100%.

the new c shapes offer the same and better wind ranges, better safety systems, and just as big jumps. The sponsered riders usually get to ride what performs best, so for the cabrinhas; there bows must be better than there c shapes hence all there riders are on them, and they rock, Ive ridden them and they far out perform any of the pre 04 c-shape kites i've ridden

if you take a look at some of the other brands, they have managed to get bow performance, out of a 4 / 5 line setups without bridles, and cheaper... without the pulleys either. and unless you have tried any of them you wouldnt believe the performance they give, it's pretty much the same as comparing a bow to a pre04 c - shape in difference of power delivery and wind range, and more importantly safety features/relaunchability.
but they still don't feel like a bow and thats why bow riders love bows.

bow kite vs C kite is like comparing a twin tip vs directional, both have advantages and disadvantages. Riders have a choice...yay

Sorry
I try really really really hard to avoid blubbering off into the yabbadda yabbadda yabbadda ...........
but its a really tough call
esp when youve just come in from a totally fun & productive 3 hour session that would have been a frustrating blustery 1 hr on my old fashioned 'C's
my jury is most definately IN
Love my 10m turbo - kiting may never be the same again

Had a great downwinder in the "flat water" from City Beach to North Trigg on Saturday, 30 knots plus, lit on a 9 mtr bow, perfect for the endless smooth flat water runs...

has anyone done/seen an intermediate rider who has only used bows try out a c?? would be interesting to see how the seemingly easier learning curve of a bow translates into "proper" kiting? reckon the first time they get a gust or try a down loop it would frighten the u know what out of them!!
