Hope this topic hasn't come up before

I've got terrible eye sight and i'm wondering what people's experiences are with prescription sunnies which are designed for water. As far as i know the companies that make them are oakley, dirtydog and barz optic. Anyone know of any other brands, especially cheaper ones? I've got a normal pair of prescription sunglasses except the lenses can pop out fairly easy, so i'm guessing i'll need something water sport specific. I don't think lava's will do prescription. Are there any shops which sell dirty dog or barz optic goggle style glasses here or do you have to order online.

Hi Davo
I don't have experience with specially designed sunnies for presecrip lenses but do wear normal sunnies with presecrip lenses occsionally while kiting, they are fine, lenses don't pop out/don't fog up, although I usually wear contacts and normal sunnies. I just got a new pair of prescrip sunnies actually from just spectacles, they have their own brand which aren't too uncool and are free with hbf rebate or about $100 without(inc prescrip lenses).
hope that helps

Hi Davo,

I saw these 'Sun Dog' glasses. Look like water jackets but are only $99. You can get prescription lenses put in them. SOS were going to get them in.

Thanks for the help,
I've tried contacts and kept losing them and i'm 17 so can't really go for laser surgery cos my eyes are still changing heaps. i'll check out the sunnies at sos after exams then they seem pretty reasonably priced.

Regarding presciption sunglasses: I tried Bolle frames with NuPolar lenses. Worked fine, except lenses tended to pop out of the frame. Frames (and lenses) are currently in the vicinity of Pelican Point. Spent a huge amount of money on Rudy Project frames with Spazio lenses. Great fit, minimal distortion of peripheral vision, lenses do not appear to have any tendency to pop out (after one "season" of use). If I loose these, I will have to sell my house to purchase another pair.

You'll lose prescription sunnies too, especially if myopic like me. Near impossible to find even if they float and they'll cost you big $$$ to replace.

Solution? Normally, day-to-day I wear glasses. When I kite I wear daily disposable contacts for the duration of the session. They're cheap, covered by Medibank Private and leave me free to wear normal water sport sunnies such as the Seaspecs brand. In the event that they come off, I can see well enough to see them floating...

i used to wear prescription barz optics. it was pretty expensive but it helped me to see where I was going! Now I just use contacts and don't have a problem unless I have a mega stack and then I might lose one.

Actually once I thought I lost one, but then about 5 hours later that night at a party it came back. It had just been hiding around the back of my eye! I was like "I CAN SEE! I CAN SEEEEE!". I'd had a few beers....

I have had a lot of luck using clip on sunglasses
cliponguys.com/ . Not the kind that have big metal bars, but custom clip on sunglasses
cliponguys.com//custom-clip-on-sunglasses.php
!

I didn't know if I was going to like them, I thought they'd look stupid on me like the ones I see old people wearing. But these actually look good. you wouldn't even know they were clip ons!

The best thing about them is they don't blow off when I'm sailing and they are polarized so there isn't any glare from the water.

Something worth looking into at least. Just my 2 cents.

go the contacts

good up to about 2xhead high surf

Only time ive lost them is at margs, that was even squeezing my eyes closed they still got sucked out after a wipeout, and another time when pulling off the back of a wave surfing they blew out but anywhere else no worries.

I wear hard lenses so its not as easy, they get washed out and they're pretty expensive to replace. I ended up getting the adidas evil eye because you can clip in prescription lenses and use them with contact lenses for normal daily use.

I've been using the oakley water jackets with prescription lenses for 2 years of kiting and surfing now, with the head strap and a gath over the top to keep it all in place.
Still look as new, no scratches, and most importantly, bombproof through all the biggest kitecrashes you can imagine. Only just had to buy a new bottle of the water repellent solution in the last month. I think they are worth it in the long run.

Davo

I've been looking for the right sunnies to kite with for a while. Problem is the good ones seem to be freakishly pricy. I've gone with Daily soft contacts cause I wear my glasses for most days when i'm not doing any water sports. Doesn't really answer your question just what I've found to work.
