i have arranged a meeting at my house 6pm-7pm sat 1st may to discuss the recent meeting between waksa, calm and rockingham city council.
the main issues seem to be our impact on the wildlife on the islands.

i have spoken to guys down the beach and some great ideas have been thrown forward.

1- insurance reqd to kite in our area( we hope to install this on a sign)
2- sandbags to be used instead of boards to keep a kite down on the beach( boards are not heavy enough now to safely hold down a kite)

3- lines to be either disconnected or layed out on the kite during rest periods(in the interest of public safety)

4- some discussion has been had regarding making the beach in front of the penguin island carpark from the jetty north to the last beach access from this carpark a no launch or land zone.( people using the cafe or the ferries often pop down to the beach to watch kiters.

5- to be confirmed with calm restrictions regarding how close we can go to the islands.(to minimalize our impact on the wildlife breeding and living on these islands)

any ideas are welcome so feel free to give us your input. i can be contacted on 95922317 mik. or just post your ideas on the forums.

I'm interested to know how many kiters you have on any given weekday/weekend day in the summer.

Cheers & good luck with the meeting.

it is very strange, we used to get anything upto 40 kiters in different areas around the bay but this year this number has dropped.probably peaked this year at 30 kiters. most days we have a group of kiters around the 10-15 number with approx 6 at safety bay and 5 or more at penguin island. we had a lot of tourists this year. we had a group of kiters that used to travel here every weekend from scarbs, cockburn and other areas but hardly seen them this year. happy kiting. mik

...the penguin island area is very full when the wind is right and couldnt possibly fit any more kiters...those folks from other spots are must better off staying where they are also the penguins attract sharks to the area making too dangerous for anyone without local knowledge...
