hi,
Was wondering how people self land their kites with 5th lines in strong winds (other than walking to the kite holding the 5th line). I am used to doing to with 4 lines but the same technique seems to lead to a heavy landing for the kite, then in stronger winds it rolls over ready for relaunch...
Any tips would be great.

if you're safety is on the 5th just unhook and ditch the bar and hang on to the 5th/saety and the kite will just land down wind of you softly.....well at tleast my slingshots do!!!!
best to let it go at 12 oclock....if you doit at the side the window of
it will blow down wind across the beach.

thanx brucex,
is there a way you can land it its leading edge as you leave it on the beach? dosent what you say lead to it sitting there for relaunch? Im just wondering if you can land it upside down as you would leave it unattended...

if you ditch the bar and hold the 5th line it will land with the nose of the kite into the wind. It may land e upor face down but you will be able to walk down to it and turn it over ...just keep tension on the 5th

The last place to release the kite is 12oclock. It will probably nose over and stuff up, maybe even rip your kite before it hits the ground.(thats if you super unlucky)

What I do for a guaranteed landing is unhook.
Grab the bar like a kite loop and let the bar go before the power comes on.
(Doing like this starts the kite flying to where its going to land.)

Usually my car is parked on the beach so I tie the 5th to the my roo bar.

But if theres no car around I bury my board to be a sand anchore and tie the 5th line to to a foot strap.

All is sweet after this. I just leave my kite to dry.
I have never been in a situation this doesnt work 100% in any wind.

Pornstar is 100% correct besides the whole nose down thing, only bad 5th line setups do that. Let it go at 12 and should land softly.

Hey monkey, pornstar seems to be saying dont let go at 12.
Hey pornstar can you explain it again like i dont know how to kiteloop or where your hands are when you do.
Got a newly converted fuel which i havent used yet so would be interested to learn before closing my eyes and throwing the bar

1) fly the kite out to one side of the window, til it is maybe 2-3m off the ground (or at least the arc span plus a bit off the ground)

2) place hand on safety

3) dive the kite hard toward the ground, then

4) when it is about half way down to the ground, pull safety so all tension comes onto 5th line BEFORE the kite hits

5) kite will land on one wingtip and pivot to land stable in LE down position (if it doesn't it may roll once downwind then land that way anyhow)

6) whatever case.....walk up to kite holding 5th and stabilise

works for me everytime with matrix 11m and 13.5m 05 kites.

They land a lot softer than from 27m up at 12 o'clock, and it doesn't flutter around while you walk up the line.

try in lighter wind first with some space downwind, practice makes perfect.

Letting go at 12 oclock has never ****ed up for me. Letting it go at the side may cause your kite to lift up and down and drag towards the middle of the window, if you let it go at 12 it will fall in the middle and wont drag across the beach. The kite does not accelerate towards the ground if you let it go at 12 it floats down at a constant speed, and lands reasonably softly.

NJPORNSTAR IS RIGHT.

However the best fun way, in any onshore direction is to come to the beach hot and kite low, then as kite crosses over dry sand pull safety.
Kite instantly rocks onto back and sits on sand as you coast to a stop. pull 5th a bit more and kite will hover.
then walk to dry land unhook 5th and walk along 5th to kite.
if you hold the front lines as well when walking to kite you can control the hover.

If you let go at 12O'clock the kite falls from the sky and land lE down and into wind. with a thump.

I just take it right to the edge of the window, and then as the kite begins to gentle hit the ground, pull hard on the 5th line and it should just swing so it faces into the wind (wind pushing down onto the kite) Works sweet for me... if not then yeah just unhook and let it sink like a towl.
