Andrew McAuley, the kayaker who's gone missing of Milford Sound, is a good mate of mine. He just learned to kite last year, as part of his mastery of just about every sport under the sun. He learned the way he does everything, just hooked in and took off. We have been planning a big kite skiing trip somewhere next year, afte he got this sea-kayaking thing out of his blood.

Andrew's been in the water for 48 hours now. We believe he has a dry-suit, and that he could survive for up to 4 days. The water there is a surprising 18 degrees, so the chance is real. There's a chance they may call the search off tomorrow but we're fighting to keep the search going for a few more days. Kiwi Rob Hewitt survived three days in a wetsuit last year (www.scoop.co.nz/stories/PO0602/S00045.htm)

So say a prayer for Andrew tonight, for a bloke who paddled a kayak across the Tasman Sea, through two gales and a major storm, to within 40 km of New Zealand.

Ben, I have been thinking of him all day after reading about it on the news this morning.
My friends and I spent a while this afternoon looking east across a wild ocean in absolute awe that any man would be brave enough to try to paddle across.
This afternoons report mentioned that you were working on a documentary of the trip. Heres hoping for a happy ending.
I'm sure people all over the world are thinking of him.
And thanks for posting this.

Andrew is a fantastic adventurer and a really good dude. We shared a few kite/snow missions and he was the consummate mission man - well prepared with impressive enthusiasm.

I am told that the weather over there in Puysegur, (south westland sea area) is unseasonably settled at the moment - calm and warm, and I hold hopes for him because he's such a hard core guy.

We are thinking of him

Fiona and Pete Lynn

If he was well prepared wouldn't he have an epirb, in which case he'd be found pretty quickly.

hope he is okay.
i think he was well prepared, but clearly never had time to acess his emergency equipment as from what his wife was saying, he would have used it. If anyone could survive this long - it sounds like he would be the man.

He had a lot more then an EPIRB Notwal, he was completely prepared. They dismissed the distorted radio distress call he made thinking that he would have activated his EPIRB.

Taken from his website....
the tally of equipment failure thus far... tracking beacon (carked it after first capsize 3 weeks ago); secondary sat phone (suffered same fate in same capsize); watch (no longer knows what time it is, so he's figuring if it's dark, it must be time to transmit his report!); broken pivot arm on Casper (apparently not affecting his performance);
...

No matter how much gear you take when u are on the water that long things break.

I am not going to speculate what happened as most of it is media dribble. I do know that the cockpit of his kayak was seperated (he put it over his head when he slept). This really sucks though, the guy has just been kayaking for a month from Tasmania to NZ, sleeping in his kayak. He was within a days paddle and this **** happens. I am desperate to know he is ok and I pray to god that he is rescued. However it isnt looking good when all he had was a spray jacket

My thoughts and prays are with you Andrew, you have got bigger balls then I could ever dream of having mate. Hope your alright.
