the push to promote kiting to surfers will only lead to even more crowded breaks and beaches. it doesnt take many kites to choke a wave. so please stop pimping the sport, there are enough people on the water already and it only benefits the manufacturers and shops

hey mate, im not telling people not to try it, if someone wants to get into the sport good on em. but i am not going to talk it up at the pub or encourage any surfers i know to start.
it might be inevitable but the less crowded years we get the better IMO.

Kitings NEVER going to take off !

What an Earth are you worried about ?

Most of the time me and my mates are looking for someone else to turn up !

I am worried it will die out!
Lets face it, it is:

# too hard
# Too expensive
# You can only do it if the wind is up,and,
# Most of the time the wind is crap.
# When the wind is good, you can't go
# When you can go,there is no wind!

It a big county and there's a lot of places to go i would have loved another person to kite with.

I had "it" all to my self. Kind of a weird feeling kiting on your own. Guess i should just be thankfull every kiter in the Sydney area went to Kurnell or didn't bother.

And besides what wrong with trying to get your mates to start up the sport. They'll only do it if they want to.

P.S. was that you way over on the other side of the bay "Baz" I was there but no one else was (at 9 am) and did feel like trying to self launch between the trees looked dodgy

If you think your spots are crowded then go and find spots that aren't. You obviously take having other kiters around for granted. I kite in tazzy and the most kites I've been on the water with in the last 12 months was 5, and that was awesome. You're always kiting solo down here so it’s great when you get a few people together.
The best thing about kiting to date is the good attitude that everybody seems to have. The last thing we need is for the hardcore territorial surfer mentality to creep in.

Its a wicked sport with heaps of scope.
Australia's a big country with a LOT of coastline and ****loads of waves.

Get over yourself.

Hey Stamp,

The only way to stop surfers from getting interested in the sport is to stop riding in the waves.

We train heaps of surfers and ALL of them come to us because they saw someone ripping it up in the waves when it was blown out and crap for paddling.

Probably 90% of the interest we receive in getting lessons comes fom people who saw kiting on the beaches at their local spot on a windy weekend when people have enough time to visit the beach and see kiting first hand.

It has nothing to do with any marketing to the mass public from distributors, retailers or schools. Telling your friends might account for about 5% of the total lessons we do, thats 1 in 20 and it's not usually because their mates were coercing them into the sport, it's usually because they see their mates going out and enjoying the conditions they hate every summer seabreeze afternoon.

Territoriality is here already at busy breaks like Gnaraloo, Scarborough, Lancelin, Margaret River, and Coronations. It's inevitable. You will not be yelled at, "signalled" or given stink eye if you show some respect and abide by the surfer code and don't interrupt the natural flow of the spot.

Stop the likes of the company team riders, DVD's and magazines promoting kite "Surfing" and you will have an end to the steady stream of kooks trying to learn to ride twin tips in the only decent peaks along the coast.

Nothing against people learning the ropes in the surf, just don't choke the good spots with crashed kites and body dragging around searching for your board every 5 minutes in the wave zone. Learn to be very proficient in choppy water before you venture into the surf.

Be considerate enough to go 100m upwind where wave quality is less important but you can still get the basics down before entering the waters with the guys and girls who DO know how to ride in congested, difficult surf conditions and know what each other are doing.

There is good karma at the surf spots if you can ride and "fit in".

Good winds,

my spot is not crowded. a busy day is 6 kites out, and thats one reason i moved here. everyone looks out for each other and there is no aggro.
but when i go surfing there is crowds at every break and too much attitude. the territorial surfer mentality you're talking about only happens because of too many people in the sport and thats what will happen to kiting if it gets crowded everywhere.
i have ridden at popular spots overseas and nobody shows any respect for anyone else because there are so many kiters. i would hate to see that happen here.
its nothing personal against anyone wanting to get into kiting, i will always help anyone starting out.

Stamp it is the people with your mentality that cause the problems, you would have the same whinge in any interteest you were involved in. Mr self importance personified, spoilt child syndrome, its all about you.

Everyone else give up kiting Stamp wants it, see what he wants next week. You

Crowds are inevitable.

The better we all get the more people will see us and want to enjoy the fun!!

All sports grow the same way. Just enjoy the ride, show respect and be positive. I agree with Kitehard's sentiments.

Australia's coastline is huge. Share it, stay happy and rip it up!!

The only time you'd get surfers keen on kiting is if their was a 2 month lull in swell with a steady NEast onshore watching guys kiting down the coast . Thats what happened to me

Realise you may be just taking the piss, but understand perfectly what your gettin at Stamp ... but, let's face it mate, it is inevitable that kiting is going to get more and more crowded ... many times I think how lucky 'our generation' of kiters are to be into it now ... enjoy it while you can I reckon...

As a surfer of many many years, I too, have seen how surfing has come from an 'underground' sort of despised activity (when I first started) to what it is today - sold-out to the masses ... blame this on pro-surfing I reckon and the big surf companies that have cleaned up by selling surfing to the masses ... throw in all these surf schools as well ... surfing in my opinion was and always is best when it's just you and a few mates out sharing uncrowded waves (Wayne Lynch your a legend)... can't deny that ... that's what it's all about ... nobody likes surfing crowded waves - hassling and the dog eat dog world that surfing mostly is these days is not where it's at and never was at ... but, pro-surfing, these huge surf companies etc... have sold it out for the benefit of just a few and ruined surfing to some degree ... selfish you might ask ? well, yeah I spose I am in this regard ... but take Bali for an example: what a **** f..king fight it has become there ! I still love the place (first surfed there in '78), but just a month ago I was there again and you've got Balo's (Javo's now as well) hassling the f..k outa anyone who's not an Indo - punch-up's are common place ... (thanks to a large extent to the Hawaiians - the Da Hui 'black board-short' crew especially, who came over a few years back and told the Balo's to take their turf back and hassle the **** outa tourists and the quite large 'local' expat surfing community who live there now)... was surfing the beaches with some expat mates, and these Balo's who were just learning and couldn't surf for **** were calling us off waves even though we were sitting and taking off 20~30 mtrs inside the pricks ! ... most of 'em dream of becoming 'pro-surfers' or 'sponsered' surfers and making money outa it ... absolutely no respect at all ... been going on there for years now ... (actually, can't blame 'em really i spose, in a poor country it's way better than digging ditches for a living) ... it's just the way it is in respect to surfing there, and lots of other places now...

However, in regards Kiting, it's a bit of a catch 22 situation ... as it's an equipment intensive sport, you realy need good, well stocked kite-shops for all their products, services and info ... big companies like Naish, North, Cabrinha, KitePower etc... provide a wide variety of products which gives us a great amount of flexibility and choice when we decide what type of gear we prefer to use... without mass production the products we use in kiting would be much more expensive to purchase (unlike surfing where most gear is still hand-crafted and can/could survive in a more cottage style of production) - for these kite companies to survive, they do need a decent size kite-boarding population to market to ...

Spose we can't have it both ways ... would love kiting to remain relatively underground, but more and more surfers (and others) are going to realise that kiting (especially the no-paddling aspect) is just an extension to surfing and will get into it ... it's gunna get more crowded that's for sure ...

out on my own on saturday in 18knot winds in the pond, cept for a couple of learners who didn't hang about.

Why? because everybody else was either typing in this post with their CAPS LOCK KEY ON, or being cool "down at the waves".

i say encourage everybody to do it in the surf, leaves the flat spots open for solo kiting.

G'day Taxi

Your right that's what happened to me too. I surfed everyday no matter what at least once. I started kiting for the reasons that you said but now I'll kite with my surfboard whenever I can.
I am still really pumped on surfing specially in the winter, but not if there is enough wind to drag me around.

If old mate is worried about crowds, I've seen the crowds disperse when the surf picks up.
Maybe he should consider having a bash in the bigger stuff. Just a Thought.
He might want to talk to Shane Simpson 'Tsunami' for some tips!! He tears it apart when doods are making excuses on the beach.

Hi MergaTroy
I've done heaps of downwinders with a decent swell running and a crowd problem is defnettly not a issue. But on the other hand i've been at the river mouth flat water and it's been mayhem. That's why i kite the open beaches 99% of the time.
