So I have read the 'new' kite strutless thread - and today had a concern that one of the struts on my 2012 Griffin Argo was not as it should be ! But only after I landed. - Does it really matter if one or more go flat in flight??

As (like many kites) I can close off the struts before I pump the unit up - I wonderered what the kite might my fly like with NO presure in the 4 struts?? Havent tried it but I guess the struts are there for a reason !!

Has anyone tried this ? Is this a bad idea to give it a go?

I'm not trying to start a new trend but just really interested in aerodynamics and stuff !!

And wondering how BAD a strutles kite can be - particularly if its meant to be a supported strut kite !

If you can't notice the difference of having even one of your struts flat I would say you are probably not in-tune very well with your equipment. Or, perhaps you have a magical kite.

But seriously, kites fly so much worse even when slightly underflated, shape is lost and things like upwind performance and de-power are compromised significantly. As an example if you fly a Fuel with centre strut not inflated you can't even go upwind.

Yeah right - interesting !

I have never flown any kite underinflated so havent experienced the low pressure situation - and also have to admit to always having my struts fully inflated !!

So - maybe I will get the go pro out and have a crack at flying the kite with all struts 'uninflated' to see what happens - seeing as it seems to be an unexplored adventure!!

Footage to come - ......

Just make sure it isn't to windy and be ready to bail.

Not a good idea really. I had a strut lose it's air on one side once, and I was doing some decent boosts. When I first went out I was nailing these airs, and after 4 or 5 I started crashing because the kite would not redirect fast enough. I thought it was my technique, and being very stubborn I kept trying. Until I crashed so hard I heard two little pops in my knee. That was last year. Came in and realized the strut had blown and it would not fly properly.
Kite designers spend their lives fine tuning every little aspect of their kites, and every square inch matters. So under inflated kites, lost struts or battens, they matter. And unless you are a total noob, you should feel when something is not right. The kites will fly like hairless dogs. I would not recommend flying the kite without the struts properly inflated.

So what is the difference between a hairless dog and a standard hairy dog as far as flying characteristics are concerned?

I'm forever having that limp strut feeling on my early model griffin. It doesn't have a center strut, but has 3 either side. You can normally feel something is wrong with the steering and looking at the kite you can see the kite is fuller around the limp member. Unless its really windy I still stay out.

One particularly light day I had a really good session. On coming in both middle struts were flat. I guess in light weather you have trouble going upwind anyway, and kite movements are correspondingly slower. As long as things are balanced you won't notice much difference.

Why don't you try it next light weather day and start off tweaking the middle strut/struts and let us know how you go.
