Wear a full steamer, booties, gloves and a Gath with the pull-down visor. Then you can look like Robocop on the water and the nasty sun will never get you.

SUNSCREEN IS BAD FOR YOU , IT DOESNT ALLOW YOUR SKIN TO BREATH PROPERLY . AND HAVE YOU SEEN THE LABEL ON THEM , MOST OF THE INGREDIENTS IN THEM CONTAIN PROPYL , ETHYL SOMETHING .
IF YOU DONT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE , (LIKE , I DONT ) THEN WHY PUT IT ON YOUR SKIN????

Skin cancer is bad for you. Eventually it stops you breathing completely. The sun has no label and no respect for national testing guidelines, there is no ingredient list to refer to, but I think it contains UV and some other wavelengths.
In fact no-one knows if it is a particle or wave!! How suspicious is that?
If you dont like wavelengths, then DO NOT GO OUT DURING THE DAY (they dont tend to be so prevelant at night).

Serioulsy though - I use teh Black tube of Bannana Boat and it works great, but is very sticky. I have a "piece" cut out of my upper lip a few months ago, and the Derm told me that there is a product to be released here from Neutrogena (SPF 85 in the US, but not allowed to be declared as >30 in Oz & Europe) that is marketed as "Dry Touch". I cannot see it being really dry, but it might be less greasy then others. I eagerly await its release here in Spirng.

Put it on before you leave home and wash your hands. Easy as and you can make sure its evenly rubbed in with the mirror. Also gives you protection whilst rigging.

I use invisible zinc on my face, blistex on my lips, Banana boat surf on my arms and the cheapest greasy-as 30+ sunblock on my hairy legs.

Have heard of a gel-type product but never used myself.

This is for a reason, anything over 30+ gives no added protection and only encourages complacency (not reapplying).

No arguement there. But at the same time for those of us who are palies, there is a big difference between 30 and 85. I can burn in five minutes on the hottest days. Factor 30 gives me 2.5 hours on the water. Factor 85 would give me 7 hours protection.

I am diligent about reapplying, but would enjoy having a greater margin of safety.

If you want nongreasy sunblock you can use alcoholbased sunscreen, its ideal for water sports 30SPF will give you about 97% protection, 50 SPF if it was available would give you about 1% more and probably would increase risk of cancer from sunblock chemicals 10 fold.

I use Banana Boat Ultra in the black tube and it works fine. Rub it in well before you go out so it dries properly. Make sure you clear the excess off your eyebrows, especially if you wear sunglasses. If you don't it will run onto the glasses and into your eyes.

I bought some invisible zinc (the very expensive brand) and it did not work very well. It was like having wax on my skin and I still got sunburned. I threw it away.

The best thing is to wear one of those RipCurl surf hats so you don't have to grease up the top of your head and face.

neutrogena Ultra-sheer dry-touch sunblock SPF 70

I brought a whole lot back from the states when I went there. You can get the 45+ online. It is absolute gold. I run, ride, kite with it on and its not greasy and doesnt run into my eyes. given up on everything else.

Having drama with your lips try Berts Bees lip balm - Ive been trhough the whole spectrum of products and had a nasty skin cancer treatment on my lips too - this for me is the only thing that has really worked - lots of natural ingredients and outlasts the invisible zinc... I also now wear one of those FCS indo rashies... another great product!

There is lots of good info on sunscreens here. They have a big database of products, ingredients and scientific articles.

http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/special/sunscreens2008/summary.php

"In a new investigation of 1,103 name-brand sunscreens, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found that 4 out of 5 sunscreen products offer inadequate protection from the sun, or contain ingredients with significant safety concerns."

Personally I use an Aussie made zinc based sunscreen with 100% natural ingredients. It's best if you put it on a bit before you hit the water. I havent had a problem with the greasy factor.
