Is there any wind / kitesurfing during winter in or around Sydney.
anything at all?
or do I need to pack my kite away?

There's plenty, you just have to be prepared to do day trips to get the best of it. We kite all year round....it's a sin to pack you're kite away!

Look at kitebeaches on the internet and they tell you where you can kite in what winds plus the NSWKBA website has plenty of info.

Yes.
For both, actually!
Unless you're prepared to invest in a ridiculously small kite....
It's stupidly strong, off shore and gusty as hell, the water is freezing (you will feel like you're back home), you need to drive 2h to reach a kitable spot, the southerlies are coming 45 knots bang on (so much fun to fly a 4m2!), it's dark by 5pm, all together... be prepared to get highly depressed...
Or.... You can alternatively head to North Queensland....

But don't you worry: I've asked Wind God to make this summer never ending!!!

there was a 20kt+ southerly almost every week last winter if I remember correctly. I managed at least 3-5 sessions a month over winter and I only went out on the non-rainy, 20-30kt, cross/onshore days. Could have easily doubled that if I didnt mind kiting in the rain or was prepared to drive further.

only really possible if you can drop everything and go kite when its windy

Blimey Em.....that's a bit of a negative response!! Kiting at any time is fun and from my experience it's not that bad.....to be honest some of the NE'rs we've been getting this summer have been gustier than the winter winds.#13;#10;#13;#10;It's true I wear booties and a winter wettie but whenever out its always fun...you just dry off and wrap up warm quickly!!#13;#10;#13;#10;

I'll side with Caelah, the NE'rs have been a bit **** but Caelah a 2mm wettie is not a winter suit. At home most of the guys and girls ride in 5/5's and some of them wear dry suits. Sooooo happy I moved

Ahh Wind God, I used to love Snow God, but mankinds reliance on fossil fuels has made his powers weak. I love you Wind God and I'll be kiting all winter.

Yippee!!

Dont pack it away now its time for the crowds to go away. Yes there are places to kite but be prepared to hang on its very gusty wsw, nw or w and sometime if your luck in the arvo towards the end of winter you get the odd ne.The backside of palmy can be ok or head north to the central coast to a place called canton beach in Tuggerah Lakes near toukley. Take the sparks rd turn off from the freeway and you'll find it. Or head further north to squids ink or hawks nest.
Happy Kiting.

Wasn't trying to be negative, really... just honest....
Or may be I just have been spoiled in the past, living in places where it was summer all year round and blowing 20 knots steady every day...
I just looove summer in Sydney... It's brilliant!
kitesurfing, surfing, partying, having my friends around, it's as close as it gets from heaven on earth...
But I truly do think winter sucks big time... ( it got me really down last year and I really don't want to see this summer ending...)
Yes, it's windy in winter. And it's cold, it's crap and it's no fun....
But it's always better than nothing, will agree with that bit....

PS: Crazy Canuk, Umina is dreadful on southerly... YOU REALLY DONT WANT TO GO THERE!!!!

The more picky you are with your days the less you will kite. Buy a decent steamer and a kite that can handle a large wind range and you will be fine as long as you have some experience.

everyone told me I needed to pack my kite away during winter when I started last year but I managed fine. Just makes those NE'er so much easier to kite when they come back.

Stopping for winter is just soft..... the blah blah blah is just excuses.

I kitesurf and mountainboard with a kite too. Gusty wind just adds to the excitement.... and as someone already said, it just makes the summer time even sweeter.

I remember one session on the mountainboard in the middle of winter, I rode the longreef golf course in a southerly at night under a full moon. It was awsome. That one will live in my memory for a long time. That was about as far from a sweet NE in 20+ degree water as you can get but still one of the best sessions ever.

The southerlies are good, it's the westerlies that have the bite [}:)]

Good winds,

Excellent news!!!!
After kiting in winter in the UK in -1 air temp and even more with windchill , I dont think its going to be worse than that here. Just as long as there is some wind.
I dont mind kiting in gusty weather - as long as I can kite.

Mate, you will be in Paradise !

Water temp about 14-18 c
Air temp about the same.
Frequent West,SW and NW winds 20-30 knots.

Half hour from Sydney centre go South to --Kurnell or Boat Harbour.

One Hour North-- Canton Beach or Picnic Point at The Entrance.

Flat water spots, for surf you would have to go a couple of hours North to Birrubi or somewhere like that.

Has anyone been to New Celedonia from April-Sept. Based on my experience from Mauritius it should be pretty good?
