Have a look at the In The Loop website - it's got some good info on the local spots.

Pallarenda is the closest spot..therefore the busiest.

Same here.. moving to Townsville in two months (from Brissy).

I was up there for 3 months at the start of last year and was kiting almost every day. The regulars at Pallarenda are a friendly bunch, be sure to have a chat to them about local rules and spots, as there have been accidents in the past involving kites, power lines near the beach and maybe a bushfire.

You cannot kite along the strand. Near the city you have Pallarenda (shallow a fair way out, small chop) and Ross River mouth (didn't kite there myself). Alva is an hour and a half away, but worth the drive if you're making a day of it. Flat water area when the tide's in and decent swell other side of the sand bank.

I didn't kite over on Magnetic Island, heard the wind isn't as consistent over there, but I'm definitely keen to have a go at Nelly Bay when the conditions suit. Neoniphon seems to be the guy to talk to if you want to kite on the island.

As for kite size, I was fine with just my 13m fuel for the whole time, although a smaller kite on some days would have been good. I'm 80kg.

Good luck with the move, might run in to you up there.
