heard the name 'towra' being bantered around a bit lately and was wondering what the place is like. wheres the best launching point from.. dolls or middle beach brighton? does the tide matter? plus is it safe for an intermediate rider like myself? from all reports it sounds like a good spot. whats are peoples thoughts

Towra is great. It doesn't really make a difference where you start from. The more downwind it is on one way the more up wind it will be on the other. There are lots of kiters going from Dolls to Towra during the day. I just gets hard when the wind is low and the current is wrong or when the wind comes too much from the E.

Beware that at low tide it can get very shallow close to the beach at Towra. So you might get one or the other scratch on your board if you ride too close to the beach or get stuck at high speed and deliver something to talk about for the other riders.

I would avoid putting your feet on the ground (there have been some sea urchins spotted in the area as well as the occasional sting ray). The best thing is just to keep your board on and let it touch the ground. If you loose your board, you may want to bodydrag to it instead of walking to it...

The area is very big. I've been there with 20 kiters and it still was ok. It's better if there are less than 10 though.

I hope that helps...

ok, so there are Bull sharks, the occasional visit from Cyclops our one eyed white pointer (don't ask), sea urchins, sting rays, oyster shells, sea weed/grass, mangroves, trees, dead on-shore wind and a downwind Gravitational pull due to the ghosts of the past.... No fisherman which is a bonus, but all and all a good spot!

Have fun..

Sometimes it is awesome, for all of the reasons mentioned, but it is definitely not a 24x7 sick spot.

High tide leaves it less that flat. Crowds up surprisingly easily. The wind can be funny (light) in there too at times. Downwind = trees. Trouble = long swim / walk home.

Having said all this it is better than dolls (lets face it that ain't hard), and the more people kite there the less likely we are to get banned from dolls. HOWEVER its the folks who cant / wont go to towra that are likely to get us banned in the first place, so i guess that argument is kinda moot.

Besides. Back in the good old days (before the sand dredging) towra was WAY better...
