Try it out on a light wind day and it'll give you a little taste of whats to come. Don't bother trying to hold your line or cut upwind whilst unhooked, just play around and carve the first few times. I'm still at the 'playing around unhooked' stage and am just starting out with the occasional railey.

Unhooked is an awesome feeling but i'm still not game enough to unhook in a stonking wind... yet.

Hey Graceful,

Everyone here's talkin like unhooking is hard or some gnarly trick, thats crap!

Here's a couple of pointers to steer you in the right direction.

Firstly, when you unhook, the centre of effort (pull) will be from your shoulders not your waist so you wont have the leverage you are used to. This will translate into you feeling a bit too powered and you may get pulled downwind out of control. Just keep your kite a bit lower and depower the kite with the trim before you unhook so you feel a little less than comfortably powered when the bar is at full power.

If you do get pulled downwind and you are losing control, grab the chicken loop with one hand and steer the bar whilst sheeting out with the other, this will depower the kite and allow you to hook back in quickly.

You can also carve toeside away from the kite which will put the kite instantly to neutral again allowing you to regain control.

Keep your kite lower than 45 degrees when you start, it will help you to keep an edge.

A rule of thumb: If you cannot ride along for 200m hooked in with the bar pulled all the way in to full power, then you are too powered to unhook, depower some more with the trim.

So, go ahead and unhook, have fun and if you die at least have a suicide leash

Good winds,

Great description Kitehard. have never tried it but will give it a go. I checked the www.iksurfmag.com/ as well. I found a very detailed how-to in Issue No. 6.

Cheers
