in reply to your question,
yeah you can put straps on a wakeboard, people do it for little kids learning to ride behind a boat or cable for the first time...

Using a wakeboard for kiting, can noticeably decrease your learning experience. As wakeboards are made to be used behind a boat at a consistent rate, kite boarding you are never traveling at a consistent rate, it is always variable. For low winds, don’t bother. Wakeboards compared to kite boards are fairly heavy, and this is so they enable faster jumps off boat wake and help you add a turn to the trick. Their rocker is designed for hard landings, but too much rocker in kite boarding, and you can’t go upwind very well. Kite boards are more light, flexible, concave bottom, and the fins are quite different. This all allows a kite board to edge and cruise upwind, and hence, why we used kite boards and not wakeboards.

Don’t get me wrong, if you are an experienced rider, you can use a wakeboard in higher winds when you have a lot of power. You can control your rail fairly well, and your speed can easily be controlled. It’s just not highly recommended or seen.

If they have a lesson first with a qualified instructor (which I highly recc. for not only safety, but also leanring the kite and board skills, and putting the two togehter), they supply the board, kite, harness, everything needed. You don't have to have gear first, and it's better to try a few different types of gear and see what you like

If they are dead set against buying a kiteboard,
just get them to buy a 2nd hand set of 2 big fins, whack them in and make sure you give them a kite the same size as you would ride if you were goin out, and they will do fiiiiiiine...
also tell them to put a lot of weight on the nose so the board rides pretty level thru the water, that will get them upwind... or so ive found wen ive ridden a wakeboard...

tell them not to be tight... they will quit kitting beofre they learn how! being beginers they wont be able to hold down enough power to get up wind so the learning curve will be alot bigger not saying its not dooable... it would be like saying my friend surfs save him buying a new board he can just use his surf board strapless.. more than possible but harder

wakeboards are made for wakeboarding, kiteboards are made for kiting! Theres a big difference in the weight, rocker, strength, length etc etc...

lol
Greenhorn newbs learning in boots.
That's funny.
They get dragged around in the shallows on their sides,
on their backs, on their guts,
and turn turtle with a board glued to their feet.
