i believe he was a confirmed kitesurfer.

from what i gather, he was out in the water, his kite start kitelooping and Florian was dragged under waters for a long period of time.

he couldnt or wasnt able to release the safety. and unfortunatly drowned, by the time his mate came to help him .

really tragic accident.

thanks for all your support guys . i will send this link to his family and friends.

safe kiting to you all

Sad to hear. At least his family should gain some comfort knowing he went out doing what he loved. Rather than in a car accident ect.

Very sad news. At least he was doing what he loved.

Hard though it is to ask, it would be a fitting tribute to his memory to have as much information about this incident come out as possible. Can we have more details please:

What kite was he flying ?
What kind of safety release mechanism ?
Why didnt it work ?
Weather conditions ?
Location specifics if relevant (shallow or deep water?)

...and anything else of relevance.

This same scenario happened to me about 18 months ago - my PL VenomII started kitelooping and teabagging me and I couldnt find the safety release (poor design), but after the third head first dunking I managed to think my way out of it and just grabbed the front lines where they merge with the main rope (I had about 1 second pause between loops) and with full depower of my body weight - it auto zenith'ed (this is a feature unique to PL kites) on the next loop .

This auto-zenith feature pretty well saved me. I wont easily be persuaded away from PL kites even though the factory supplied velcro saftey release system is complete and deadly dangerous crap. I replaced it with the (red) top hat system and that at least means I dont have to look to see where the release is. Much better, but not perfect.

Very sad, my condolences to family and friends
and a reminder to check my safety. I have Best nemesis kites, great kites but the safety release mechanism can get stuck if not checked regularly

I returned from Margarita about a week ago. Very sad to hear. My daughter appears to have more information than I do on the topic, as she was hanging out with some of the local instructors. My impression was that the drowning was someone taking instruction or involved in a group getting instruction. I will attempt to clarify and pass along anything more I can gather from her, or via her contacts in Margarita.

Thinking about the possibilities, it isn't too hard to imagine the scenarios put forward here, whether actually relevant to this situation or not.

Personally,( and in Margarita last year), I was attempting a handle pass, when somehow the leash swung up, and I passed the handle through the leash, catching on the corner of my bar. As I landed, the kite went into "numerous" kiteloops, teabagging me for quite a way. One character on the beach later came up, and said he'd stopped counting at 17 kiteloops. I wasn't too concerned, at the time, as the kite was trending toward the water, and I figured it would eventually crash. I had my hand on the "oh ****" release, fully intending to give up on the equipment if that was absolutely necessary. After half a dozen or so kiteloops, you have some time to contemplate the situation. Initially, things are happening quite quickly.

I'd had a similar situation happen this year, and handled it much better, imo. It's not too hard to imagine that if someone were winded, or stunned, that the outcome might not be good.

I've witnessed (and personally had) many bad crashes with some nasty consequences. Once again in Margarita, last week, a young talent was showing off in very shallow water - maybe 3". As he set up for his KGB, unhooking I thought "he'd better make that!". He didn't. and crashed on his shoulder. He sat in the shallows, stunned with his dislocated shoulder. No one moved to grab his kite, and I sprinted to assist, as no one that I could see was reacting at all.

I'll query my daughter on the drowning when I can contact her.

from Canada.

RIP Florian.

In 2006 i was in Mackay Qld Aus riding a Crossbow 16m and during a front roll transition accidentally unhooked. When i re-hooked somehow the left back line had wrapped around the chicken loop . The kite looped uncontrollably 63 times. I had just changed brands on my leash and Stuffed up bigtime...had the release at the bar end where i could not reach it. Seat harness so no release from that. I was not able to disconnect in any way.

After 20 loops I could not breathe and was so exhausted I just lay on my back and got the occasional breath of air. I knew that a large line of trees along the beach would either kill the kite or kill me.

Fortunately i was kiting with Scott Fleming from Melbourne (a sponsored rider) and a good friend. He went super fast downwind, landed his kite then crash tackled mine before it dragged me thru the trees...saved my neck. 63 loops to untangles lines.!!!!!!!!!

In hindsight....dont use a kite with pulleys on the bar ends...the leaders can go slack and wrap around the chicken loop. Also I now check my leash every session.

Thanks Scotty.
