hi,
would like to know the differences between the 2 coasts?
most windy?
best spots?flat and waves?how crowded?kiteschools?shops?
i know that western australia has a world reputation but what about the east coast?
I want to travel one of the 2 coasts and want to choose the best for the kite conditions;;;
thx

Hey, I hope that this thread isn't the start of an East-West war again, but I can compare WA to Victoria (Melbourne) for you.

WA is great, it has amazing reliable wind and so much space! But, if you are a traveller, you need a car to enjoy and access the best of it. I really like Lancellin and Woodies but, if you get stuck there on a low wind day there is not much else to do. Unless you can surf at Lancellin, or like drinking lots of beer.

Melbourne has quite reliable sea breezes in the summer and one of the beaches, St Kilda you can catch the tram to. Its got something for everyone - flat water on the inside, bay swell on the outside of the breakwater. It does get crowded but compared to Europe it's not too bad. If the wind isn't up you can always walk up to a bar or restaurant, have a feed and drink, wait for the wind to come in. Lots of backpackers there so its quite a vibrant scene.

If you do come here just for a kite trip you probably will have to fork out for a car and go seeking. I would say go to WA, buy a car from a backpacker car place- you can get a station wagon for about $2-4k. (They give you a guaranteed buy back when you want to leave) and just get out there!

I live on the East Coast (Syd.) and IMO the wind sucks here compared to a WA summer. Way stronger and more consistent wind there than here and usually bigger and better waves there (at least down S WA).

If you are travelling purely to kite then the west coast offers stonger summer seabreezes than the eastcoast. But I think the east coast offers a lot more for a travelling holiday. So It all depends on what your priortys are. Ones things for sure, if you are travelling between oct-march you will get plenty of kiting in on both coasts. WA will be 25-30knots average, east coast 15-20 knots. Both coasts offer a plethora of different locations

Hi Lowkite,

WA has most schools, most shops, most wind, cleanest water, least crowds, best beaches and hottest babes in Oz!

We also have : biggest sharks, longest distances, most taxes, hottest days, least nite life.

Oh did I mention the biggest tourist eating sharks

Enjoy Oz, it's an experience!

Have to agree with you to a point max14 lived in the windy city myself for 12 years and have travelled all over the Eyre peninsula surfing and sailing.Have now spent 10 years in the west and the west is best.Crowds are not a problem with so much coast on offer. As far as amount of days on offer to tell you how many days I have enjoyed kiting in WA in my first year would have me called a liar.Absolutely insane, there is only one season here not sure if it runs the financial or calendar year Saying that I would love to spend 2 months travelling the East coast and 2 months on the West coast Eyre Peninsula.Face it Australia goes off

In WA, I was offshore as a cold front approached, and it literally was the "calm before the storm".

For three days, it was breathless.

Glassy water, and no wind all day.

It was just plain wierd.
