Just think what you'd look like walking down the beach kite under one arm helium bottle under the other.

And what are you going to do with it once you go out, the whole beach would sound like donald duck.

Hey Random Kiter,

We actually did try Helium in a kite in Hawaii back in 2002. The gas is definately lighter than air but as someone else pointed out the molecule is much smaller and the Helium bleeds out through the wall of the bladder and escapes.

It works OK in the leading edge where you have a much larger volume of Helium and the bleed is slow enough to get a couple hours in before it becomes noticeably soft and unrideable. The struts on the other hand are too small in volume and the amount lost through the molecules escaping is too high and your struts will lose shape and go soft very quickly.

The actual performance increase of the kite was barely discernable, and certainly not significant enough to warrant continued use of the Helium.

Apart from the cost and stuffing around, it was worthy of the experiment to finally bust the myth which had been floating around for a few years even before we tried it back then.

Hope this helps,

It does sound like a dumb idea and not an original one and not one that hasn't had the piss taken before - see below

www.anl.gov/education/learning-center

Would be a bit handy to have a kite that floated (in the air)though.

Did a little googling and found the following facts.

Density of air 1kg/m cubed

Density of helium 0.137kg/m

Density of hydrogen 0.069kg/m

So technically if you could make a kite with one cubic metre displacement and weighed less than 0.93kg before inflation it would float if you filled it with hydrogen to 1 Atm. Make it a bit lighter and you can pump it up to 15 Kpa or whatever.
How to get the volume in the kite? Maybe have a full shape from LE to TE, like a plane wing.
How to make a kite strong enough and that light? F**K KNOWS

I think i might have just wasted half an hour.

Happy kiting

That's alright fill the leading edge with hydrogen and have the chance it explode in flames like the historic ZEPPLIN over londen. For those that don't know what I'm talking about it's the blimp that exploded in flames and killed hundreds of on lookers in the 50's or 60's.Just made kiteboarding more extreme HA HA

Simple. I just did a search for "Self Trepanation"

Have you not heard of it before? Supposed to take the pressure off the brain and bring enlightenment.Has a cult following.

Mate thats wrong. I read 2/3 of that artical and then had to close it. I was ok with the blood and drilling through bone part. But man this guys thick (as proven by the fact it took 2 hours to drill through his thick skull).

If he had died I'm sure he would have been up for the Darwin Award. I hope he at least got an honerable mention.

Well,I am usually busy, performing Trepanation on my "friends".

However,if there is no trepaning to do,I like to go kiting.
If there is no wind,I have several old Best Hellfishes, which I have taped and glued(NO stitching!)so that I can fill them with Helium and float around !

When you say 'londen', do you mean London? Or do you mean Lakehurst, New Jersey, where the Hindenburg caught fire in 1937 killing 35 people? Hydrogen was blamed for the explosion, however subsequent studies have shown that it was more likely a static discharge igniting the fabric around the gas cells.

Pat is actually a tortaise shell glasses wearing librarian by night (when not night kiting) and he is on the money.. oh the inhumanity...

Bugger helium go the expelled scoob vapours I reckon... it can't burn twice and it surely will get you kite flying high.... now where did I put that last slice of pizza from last week?

Speaking of flying high a mate bought a coffee mug from the Eagles store the other week and they are STILL selling mugs that have "Flying High" in huge blue and gold lettering... nothing else just "Flying High"...

Eagles CEO
