what do you do when you are just learning, do your first 150m+ run, fall off, stand up and find that you have become unhooked from the chicken loop. I was standing on my toes fully powered up trying to pull the bar down which just kept lofting me...what do you do? let go, crash the kite or is there some more palatable alternative...i opted to dive the kite into the water rather than flag it; my friend (instructor) who was working his way over to me says he has never seen a more aggressive and horizontal catapult in his experience on the water.... didn't hurt and didn't bust anything....but don't fancy doing it again...is there a better way???

Let go of bar your kite should release to the fifth.
If your on a four line, let go of the bar grab the chicken loop kite should depower giving you time to hook in again

shouldn't be out learning if the conditions don't allow you to hook back in... or your really really weak. I doubt your really weak and would suggest you learn to fly unhooked as its something often skipped.

your instructor friend should have taught you that you can just hold on until the kite looses a bit of power and you can hook back in

Learn to "let go."
When you really need to , it will be instinctive.
Easier to repair your kite, your pride, than yourself.

Best advice i reckon.
Getting over the 'hang on for dear life' survival reaction is the best thing you can do. Whilst you didn't get hurt this time, you may not be so lucky next time. Spare a thought for the poor f'er you might collect if it happens again.

I think the advice about learning to fly unhooked as part of your lessons is imperative. Its easy as piss to just hold ur chicken loop with one hand and steer with the other.
