Actually I had a brilliant time at Woodies last Saturday afternoon. Started at 2pm and went until dusk. It was only good for downwinders, and barely able to keep it planing, but I had a ball. Just me, and a couple of beach fishermen. Sunday, well that was a complete waste of time. We had about 9 kiters there but no wind.

Shannon, I used to rollerblade and did a downwinder along Riverside Drive during a cyclone a few years ago. It was during the Telstra Rally Australia when the road was closed off to all but pedestrians. I was absolutely screaming along, zero wind resistance, and then this policeman saw me, stepped out into the middle of the road and formally put up his white gloved hand to stop me. After a long skid and stopping with my face in his glove, I apologised and told him I hadn't realise I was speeding, and without a numberplate he eventually decided it was too difficult to book me. Ever since I've been thinking about getting my old stunt kite out and simply carrying it along with me. I reckon in a really strong wind, at the right angle, it would really work.

Dan, what was the wind & waves like at Gnaraloo?

In light Westerlies I often get out my 5m FlySurfer Maniac & DirtSurfer along the bike path at Scarbs - see:

Awesome fun! Good value downhill when there's no wind too! Been clocked at over 70km/hr with the kite - the faster you go the more stable the DirtSurfer is - AND they have brakes so you can slow down around pedestrians, etc. Had a blast along the highway outside Carnarvon last trip up to Gnaraloo :-) They also feel MUCH more like carving turns on a surfboard rather than a skateboard.

I wouldn't recommend DirtSurfing, buggying or skateboarding with any kite that didn't have a safety leash - the pressureless depower system on the Maniac is also very nice when DirtSurfing. BTW the 5m Maniac is also my favourite kite for doing kite-loop/back-loops and wave riding in 20 knots+ too :-)

Cheers,

4 wicked kite sessions at gnaraloo in 8 days. It was a nice 12- 16 knots - perfect for a fast 15 and a floaty board.

Surf was head high - 5 or 6 reos per wave easy !

Gnaraloo fires at this time of year - just dont let the launch and rocks put you off ! High tides at this time of year makes life pretty easy.

we had 2 days of bomber 4 - 6 ft solid swell. The surf boards and pole boards got a good run once the conditions got real ! hell pits going down with centeries and tombies doing their best impersonation of small pipeline. some insane barrels threded by the hell man locals.

so to sum it up - Warm water and some of the best conditions you could dream of. Its gonna be going off for the next three days and there are no kiters there at the moment. still plenty of summer goodness left to enjoy up that way.

pain don't hurt !

yeah...as above...totally awesome!! I didn't kite at tombies though...theres a spot just north of the sand dune that has flat water for 150m and then waves out the back where I had a ball. Also tried kiting at gnarloo bay and shark alley but a bit too gusty to be really enjoyable with a strong current running with the wind.
Surf was unbelievable apart from 2 days where swell dropped off (still better than perth!).
