Way way back I tried a disc. before I had appropriated the nessesary skills to not fall on my arzzz.

The disc got lent and then vanished but will look for another.

By disc I mean the round ply disc's you throw down in a couple of inches of water, run and skim along shore with. Although we used them for waterskiing.

these are plywood, and around 7-800mm diameter and circular of course.

I have seen kids playing in the surf wash on similar things but surfboard shaped.

A guy in Townsville (name escapes me now) had a piece of helicopter door as his primary board. I heard after I left that he upgraded to a real board after carving serious chunks out of himself.

Guys, the "helicopter door" is still carving up the waters around townsville!
It now sports a red paint job (not sure if it goes faster though).

Back in the prehistoric, pre inflatable kite days, even pre foil kite days, I hot melt glued a pair of hiking boots to a pair of cut down downhill/slalom snow skis, I just kept shortening them, until they were about 50cm long, V cuts in the ends, to help get an edge on the sand before I went in the water.
It was always a downwind course with the wife picking me up, favourite run was black rock to barwon heads, approx 6klms one way!!

I ended up staying out of the water because the set up worked better on the wet sand at low tide.

I used stacks of 2.5M Wingspan delta stunt kites, had up to 6 of them, equivalent to approx 10M foil, 13M inflato!!

Then I discovered kite buggies, until I saw the first Wipika, then went back to the water with foils, non relaunchable ones, because they flew so much better than the first blimps.

Goodwinds

I once saw on Funniest Home Videos that some guy went water ski-ing at some capm site, but forgot his ski's, So he found one of those old picnic tables with the seats connected, flipped that upside down and off he went,

wonder if you could kite on one...lol.
