I've spent the last 2 winters up north and I do know May/june aren't that great wind wise. Always had awesome kiting in port douglas in July, sometimes august too, but may/june is too much of a gamble: I want to go somewhere it's cranking (life starts at 20 knots... anything bellow doesn't quite count to me....).

heli-kiting.... interesting.... can you jump off the helicopter with your kite while it's still flying? (though rigging! hm...and nice kite shredding...;-)

I checked the zephyr website, sounds nice (and expensive... but nice ), I will keep on searching on this side of the globe....

The trade wind season in NQ starts in April and goes all winter. It isn't like a seabreeze though; the trades come in pulses of 7-10days with lulls in between of a few days to a week. The frequency of the pulses varies from year to year. May-June has just as much chance of being very windy as July or August, it just depends on your luck and what the weather patterns are doing that particular year.

Port Douglas would still be a safe bet I reckon, but if you really want guaranteed cranking 20-30kn SE, then go to Cooktown, or even better, Lizard Island.
