Hi Rod,
Try Bagnalls beach in winds from the east around to the west. Fingal bay if north east, One Mile if the wind is east (ie ESE to ENE), Birubi beach if West around to the South east. South side of Port Stephens is definately not good in anything South best to go across to Hawks Nest/Tea Gardens. Next few days look pretty poor, enjoy your stay.
Constant winds,
Baz

Baz is completely on the money - I'll add two things. Birubi (the northern end) is great in a sou-west, which is often storm kiting. Safe and nice waves. Fingal can be tricky in a noreast, because the wind gets funnelled over the sand spit. This means that a slight change in direction causes a bit of havoc - it's a long swim if you are kiting on the southern side of the sand spit (which you will because it is so tempting...)

Also, Fingal Bay is freezing - the water wells up out of the sand in the bay, which makes it about three to five degrees colder than the ocean water - very odd. Just good to know for the aforementioned long swim.

If it's Nor-East Shoal Bay looks great - but don't be fooled. The eddy-current winds off Yaccaba and Tommaree fluctuate a lot.

2 hours? I drive from Newcastle and it doesn't take two hours.. I guess from Nelsons there's a bit of back tracking to the highway? Maybe kiting over would be the go! Getting back might take a bit longer..
