Watching from the shore the last 2 days too windy for me.
at brighton 20knts + small windwaves everyone just ripping it making it look so easy.

having to kite downwind with no room and crazy kites all over the place.{melville}

getting seedy swan river water up my nose and getting sinusitis

cant wait to get better

brighton sucks for beginners, unless you are so much of a beginner that you only use the kite on the beach.
go to altona, flat water, room to go down wind, and you can stand up in the water, unlike brighton.

1. You get to the beach and realise you've forgotten your board
2. You lay out your lines in dry seaweed and spend another 20 minutes getting it all out
3. Your instructional DVD confuses you - especially when they use a different kite or line set up (I tried laying lines downwind and then managed to connect L to R / tangled and my launch partner let go of the kite before I gave the ok... but luckily it crashed just to the left of some broken bottles someone left in the dunes)
4. It takes forever to pack / setup your gear
5. Your kite gets plastered with sand because it's always in the drink
6. No wind / too much wind periods are worse for you (your body forgets what its doing and you're back to square one)
7. Your spreader bar is always riding up onto your ribs
8. You gotta love body dragging and walking back up the beach (and hesitate when your friends ask you what you've been doing on the weekend instead of saying 'kitesurfing' with a smirk that you thought you would)
9. You feel like a chimp doing the 'I want to land' sign.
10. You stress about long swims back with gear in tow (hopefully...)
11. You get home and realise you've forgotten your board.

PS Lessons with AKS crew made it suck a lot less - I could probably add some REAL disasters to the list if I didn't have lessons. Highly recommended!

Try and get out there. Your kite/s would probably (probably) be fine for these winds. Its only been just 20knots.
I had 2 lessons at woodies, one run on flat water at leighton, then straight to city beach, in plus 20knots in 2m of swell during my first week. I learnt lots of things (i think my self rescue technique is perfect, but havnt done one in a long while, thanks jebus). Sure i got nailed heaps, but i learnt to respect kite. I did it away from other people but dad was watching as he kited incase i got into trouble.
I was once 3hours late for work. Wind dropped and i was waaaaaay off. Couldnt get kite back into air. Lost my board way out. Finally got back in, and started looking for my board. Ran from city beach to brighton scanning the ocean.(it was brand new and had only used it about 2times).
I became desperate and asked EVERY SINGLE kiter that came in if they had seen it.
Someone had, and not only that, the took it to shore, burried it at a rememberable spot, and presto my board was back. But my boss was pissed. Thanks again to the guys who rescued my board some time 2006.
Oh yeah, some MASSIVE knots after self rescures+seaweed+angered frustration to pull knots apart.
But yeah perth is windy like that. And will hopefully always be.

Harry you have the right idea mate - better to respect the limits and live to kite another day uninjured....as many will attest, you don't progress at all while watching the wind blow the trees from your sick bed.

Persistence is the key, this game is 90% dogged persistence and 10% skill.....just keep plugging away, session after session.....suddenly it all comes together, you'll ride away upwind, kite for hours without falling, come back with a large grin on the dial....then be hooked on checking the wind forecast 5x a day like the rest of us.....

good luck, good winds, Andy

I remember my best beginner moment...

I have a C kite and a hybrid. I was competent with both kites on the beach and body dragging, but hadn't used either with the board. My first 3 board sessions was with the hybrid but then one day i switched to the C. I remember flying in towards the beach at a decent speed and going "ok, i'll stop now, i'll just release the bar". "umm.. stop now". "AAARGH, STOP NOW".

Lets just say that the friction of sand on skin eventually stopped me. At least now i know how to control speed on a C... and i must say that i like the C better. I have 3 times as much respect for it...

Sounds like something out of that thread about bow kites and the demise of kite skills, or whatever it is. Not that I've looked at the last three pages of it.

Hi Harry,
my suggestion is get out on the water as soon as those little green arrows start blowin s to sw. Once it blows up too much for you to handle then come in. today I left home at 1pm and kited 2-3pm - it was perfect 18kn. A bit later it will be windier and choppier (is that a word?). on our rotto holidays we left on the 11 am bus, got an hour in starting with 15knots - 20kn, then came in once it was gustin to 25knots, later that day it was like 20-30 knots!

theres less wind waves early on too.
