Haven’t been to Ras Sudr but been to El Gouna in April once and Hurghada once in April another time in November. Think in May and June the wind is better, we had a few days of sitting around waiting for wind. The wind also seems to ramp up then ramp down with never a fixed levelling off period checkout www.colonawatersports.com/hurghada/weather.html

I’m sure you’ll get plenty of time on the water probably a good move to leave the 16m at home.

Couple of other points

- Be careful of the food and drink, in El Gouna had no tummy bugs, but in Hurghada all members of the group fell ill at some point, shall we just say you get nervous if you have to move too far away from a toilet.

- Don’t buy sun screen in Egypt, me and mate bought two different brands of maximum spf sunscreen from a supermarket out there and by the end of the day we were glowing like a piece of radioactive material.

Yeah there’s some good snorkelling and diving to be had should the wind not blow.

your pretty safe with food in el gouna.. I´ve also heard of getting ill in hurghada. who knows.
the wind is best from January till April but still pretty good in June. My experience were that there was strong winds or no winds. But I was there in March.
Have fun overseas and enjoy your stay.

Ras Sudr is pretty cool you should get really good winds at that time of year. Which hotel are you staying in, there is one near the lagoons, which have amazing flat water. The other is on the beach front and the lagoons are upwind. Either way the water is silly warm and super flat. At low tide you can find sand bars out to sea and session them all day long.

IKSURFMAG went there in 2007 you can see the article and pictures here, it really is an amazing spot. http://www.iksurfmag.com/issue_4_jun_jul_2007/issue_4.html#11

BUT beware the egyptians. Rude, slow, and thieving. Some are OK but the majority are pretty awful. I have been to Egypt 5 times and each time swear i won't go back. Then someone offers a free trip and i get sucked in. The conditions can be totally amazing, but life off the water is pretty dull. Especially in Ras Sudr, no nightlife really at all.

Don't leave anything unattended for a minute, it will wander off and when you report it they are about as much use as a chocolate fire guard at helping you get stuff back.

In short if it blows, you'll love it. If it doesn't be sure to have some female company and a good book...

Apart from flat water, are there any wave spots / reef breaks?
It seems all the advertising for the place (eygpt) talks up flat water & diving!

The Red Sea is quite narrow, you can see Saudia Arabia on the other side most of the time. so there is no Fetch for swell, So no reef breaks, Red Bull is right avoid dealing with the egyptians is you can, try to use the local Bedouins for everything, they are a gentle freindly people and also hate the egyptians with a passion. if you want something to do at night go stay in Dahab, Amazing flat water kiting, super cool village with some good bars, lots of people to hang with, good diving, oh and its a bedouin village so its laid back and beware easy to want to stay. Its on the Sinai peninsula Well worth going there over anywhere else

Stamp :) leave your big sizes at home for sure. May/June are ripping. Especially in Sudr. You might need 14 as Sudr is famous for lighter (that south) winds but you can always rent it.

Go to Fun Kite Centre and ask for Sylvain or Steve Walden in Airspace if you want to see some real good wild spots and not only Toursit BS :)

I disagree with Red Bull mate. Get out there and see some real Egypt. Egyptians outside tourist industry are great. Of course they are persistent like flies but mind you ever single dime they squeeze out of stupid turists is like month salary for them. Dont be afraid to tell them off hard if you find too pushy ones :) They shout a lot but they will never (Ever) touch you or insult you. Apart from religon aspect it is also in their nature to be peaceful.

Food - there is a lot of talk about bad food in Egypt. BS! hydrate a lot. This is crucial as egypt is hot and dry and will suck every single drop out of you. I have been living there for eyars and I think the worst summer was 56 degrees and no humidity. Drink a lot and you will be fine mate.

Sudr is close to Sharm if you fancy a trip. For those who think Red Sea is without swell - Go to Colonawatersports in Sharm ask for Dianne or Kev and they will show you few good spots :)

wild spots are the best in egypt so get out and about and see some more that hotel lagoons :)

good luck

May/June isn't quite as windy/consistent as it gets there but close, so pretty consistent 18-25 knot winds, occasionally to 30 I guess. (which hotel/centre are you staying at?). Take all your spares, you're a long way from a shop there!

The Red Sea is quite narrow, you can see Saudia Arabia on the other side most of the time. so there is no Fetch for swell

Ras Sudr is on the other side of Sinai (see thewindmap.com/wiki/index.php/Moon_Beach-Africa - just south of Ras Sudr) so it's still Egypt on the other side, and the fetch to the suez canal is 20-40km (depending on which centre) so on this side you do get swell out the back, say just over head high. It's hard to find spots where it's not going the same direction as the wind though.

Apart from flat water, are there any wave spots / reef breaks?

There are waves in El-Tur (given the right wind) which is further south, so has bigger swell, but it's still pretty onshore.

Was in Egypt for a month backpacking in July 2006. There are quite a few places to kite so "Wind Strength" depends on where you're going to hit. I didn't have my own gear (backpacking and all) but hired some in Safaga (very exe) Wind came in at 10.00 a.m. each day like clock work and left as quickly at 1.00 p.m. Consistent 20 knots each day. You can take boat trips there as well which are reasonably priced (like AU$20 or similar) and they will take you up to some very small islands to kite off and stay till there is no wind left. They operate Daily.
Regarding Dahab, I stayed there for like 6 nights, very cool spot and I agree with everything Mikeb said except for it being a great kiting location. The main bay area with excellent flat water is all privately owned by the big hotels. You can't access them unless you are staying in one of them and even then there are designated wind surfing areas. There is a very small lagoon just outside of this area which has potential but when I was there it would have been large enough for probably about 3-4 kiters and at its deepest would have been about shin to knee deep, mostly ankle deep. One of the frustrations when I was there as it blows 25 solid knots daily for hours on end but I had no gear and nowhere hires any out at Dahab without taking lessons.
Finally, as to the Egyptians, yes they pester you but who cares, they're trying to make a buck. A polite "La Shukran" (No Thankyou) will see them off. Having said that I wouldn't leave my stuff laying around unattended, it might just walk.
