Its winter and its freezing cold! Time to get out and look for places to kite!
Anyone has anything to say about cairns? Heard its pretty good during winter. Thinking of heading up in August.
Is Yorkeys Knob pretty much the main place to kite? Seabreezes from 15-18knots i reckon during winter?
cheers

Here is my somewhat biased veiw. Our trade winds usually pick up in June and carry through till October-ish. Yorkeys is the best place to kite mainly because of the direction the beach faces and the fact that many of the other Cairns beaches are to narrow to safely launch or land a kite. Generally it will be 20 - 28 degrees each day and you can comfortably kite in boardies and a neoprene shirt or if ya hard enough just a rashie. You could expect to kite most days and the average wind would be in the 15-20 range. Here is the disclaimer, this years weather is weird, it has been freaky cold for us and rainy and no wind YET. But there will always be wind on Green Island, It will cost you about $50 to get out and back. If you decide to Kite at Green have a word to one of the local crew who have kited out there before and they will give you the heads up. Port Douglas is also good and is only 45mins scenic drive away. The water quality in Port is often better and you get the benefit of kiting on the flat water beside the reef.

We are normally on the water from April onwards, but as cammo has said it has been a very ordinary year. July, August and september are the best and most reliable 3 months of our season.

Thats awesome guys!
What's the public transport like in Cairns? Is it easy to get to Yorkeys Knob by bus? and is it easy to get my way around via the buses?
Any cheap backpackers near Yorkeys Knob?
Kinda contemplating on driving up from sydney in my trusty old ford falcon and camping along the way and kiting and surfing the coast... not that there's gonna be much wind in between anyway! Graduating from Uni this winter so have a month or two to spare before i get a job! Just wondering if its gonna be a bitch ass drive and if i should just fly up instead
cheers!

This might be a bit OT, but I'll try to give a shout here.
Me, a friendly swedish guy on 21 years, my sister and a friend is going up to cairns from airlie beach tomorrow. I'm a beginner from Sweden, got my kite with me and have been down south but haven't got any kitesurfing done. If there's a friendly soul who would like some company catching the winds and maybe give a tip or two, I'm all ears!

owla, Yes this is Australia not Sweeden get use to it.
Assuming you're staying at a backpackers in cairns you'll be bound to catch up with some other kiters, if not find out where to go (I dont know) and just turn up, someone will help you, Australians by and large are friendly people.
Wish I was going there too, the weather is very average in Perth.
