Hi Markass,

There are no stingers in Cairns in July. They (Box Jellyfish and Irikanjis), are prevalent from October to May, even then, when the wind blows up, the stingers go to the bottom and so you are still pretty safe with a basic stinger suit.

July is sweet as, just go and get some wind, don't freak over the jellies. They usually drag nets to see how many are caught at the end of the season (May) and mostly they catch the odd one in May but June is fairly clear and July is definately the go.

Kite with confidence!

Good winds,

Irikanjis, now there's a little dangerous bugger if ever I saw one, a mate of mine nearly died getting stung from one of these on the hand climbing up a shot line after a dive, amazing how something so small can inflict so much damage, stinger suit is a must where ever these critters are, even gloves, but not alot of ppl wear gloves if any?

yeah you're right there, i've read that Box Jellyfish and Irikanjis season ends in June and we're heading over mid July. not sure if that means zero Box Jellyfish and Irikanjis???? need to investigate further.

i tell you what though we've got the best conditions in the country, if not the world over here in summer time!

Usually the end of April will see the last of the little buggers. Everyone has been kiting without suits for at least a month now. It is very unusual to hear of anyone being stung when SE winds are blowing, especially when strong. I have been windsurfing and now kiting Yorkies for over 18 years now and have never known or heard of sailboarders/kiters being stung and requiring medical attention.

I'm not sure about this, but don't the irukandji still hang out on the reef year round? Boxies inshore, seeyalater between May and November, and not a great chance of irukandjis inshore during these times, but I think some tourists diving or snorkelling out on the reef have been hit in and out of winter in NQ by irukandjis.
Could be the exhaust fumes from 4 months in this motorhome, but that's what I seem to remember anyway.
